5 Misconceptions About Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are a popular aesthetic treatment for both men and women. They are injected under the skin to give it a more youthful appearance, filling in volume loss and restoring elasticity. Many turn to fillers to plump up the lips, decrease the appearance of fine lines, and contour the face.

While fillers are considered safe and effective, there are still misconceptions regarding the treatment. If you’re thinking of getting dermal fillers for whatever reason, it is only important to separate the facts from fiction. Here are the 5 misconceptions about dermal fillers

1. Fillers are irreversible.

One common concern about dermal fillers is that they can permanently change your face or the treated area. This is not entirely true, as the majority of fillers gradually disappear over time, in about 6 months or a year, depending on the type of fillers used. After this period, the treated area will go back to its previous appearance.

Fillers, moreover, are reversible and can be removed if you’re not happy with the results. This is especially true for those made with hyaluronic acid. In doing so, your aesthetic doctor will inject a safe enzyme called hyaluronidase. This dissolves the hyaluronic acid, so the skin will absorb it.

2. Fillers are the same with anti-wrinkle treatments.

While it is true that fillers can smooth or improve the appearance of wrinkles, fillers and botulinum toxin (Botox) injections are not the same. Botox is FDA-cleared for treating moderate to severe facial wrinkles using a neurotoxin protein. It works by temporarily blocking the signal from a nerve to a muscle to relax the wrinkles.

Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are injectable gels that fill in lines, folds, and volume loss in the face. It can also improve the appearance of eye bags and dark eye circles. The gels used in fillers are commonly made with hyaluronic acid and calcium-based microspheres, which are similar substances found in the body.

3. Fillers will make you look weird and fake.

When administered by a licensed injector, fillers should not look overdone or artificial. Botched jobs and undesirable results can only happen if you fall into the wrong hands or have someone untrained to administer the fillers. It is important to only see a licensed injector and know the type of fillers that goes into your lips or face.

At Cutis Medical Laser Clinics in Singapore, we have skilled and trained injectors to administer the treatment. Also, our medical and scientific director, Dr. Sylvia Ramirez, has extensive experience with dermal fillers, including the use of Juvéderm. Dr. Sylvia, furthermore, is Harvard-trained and a US Board Certified doctor.

4. Fillers are just for lips.

Although lips are a common treated area, dermal fillers are not just for your pout. Fillers can be used on different parts of the face, including the cheeks, chin, nose, eye area, and jawline. They can restore and fill in volume loss, as well as enhance your facial features without going under the knife.

Here are some of the things that fillers can do:

  • Plump up your lips
  • Smooth fine lines
  • Improve eye bags and dark circles
  • Fill in sunken cheeks
  • Improve a weak chin
  • Strengthen jawline
  • Enhance the shape of your nose
  • Improve nasolabial folds

5. Once I start having fillers, I can’t stop getting them.

Another common misconception about fillers is that if you stop getting injections, your face will become saggy or wrinkly. This is not true. While the effects of dermal fillers will wear off after months, the treated area will only go back to its original appearance. Discontinuing the treatment will not make your lines and wrinkles worse.

The effects of the fillers will be gone and you’ll see that previous lines and volume loss will come back. You can choose to have the treatments once more to maintain the youthful effects or have a younger-looking appearance.
