7 Ways to Get Beauty Sleep

Beauty sleep is real! It affects not just how you feel the next day, but also the way your skin looks and your overall appearance. This is mainly because your body goes into reparative and regenerative mode while you doze off. It enables your skin to recuperate and repair daytime damage.

What happens while you sleep?

Our previous post about getting a good night’s sleep mentioned that many amazing things happen while you snooze. These include:

  • Your levels of cortisol (or stress hormone) drops
  • Your body makes more collagen, which helps prevent sagging and wrinkling
  • Your skin gets a break from environmental stressors (like UV damage)
  • Your brain sorts and processes all information it’s picked up during the day
  • Your immune system releases cytokines, a type of protein that fights inflammation
  • Your brain clears out harmful toxins. which is beneficial in reducing risks of Alzheimer’s disease

How inadequate sleep messes up your look?

Lack of sleep doesn’t just translate to lower energy levels and productivity. When you constantly don’t get enough sleep, your skin can look dull, tired, and aged. Poor sleep can also result in:

    • Swollen eyes
    • Dark circles
    • Under-eye bags
    • Less glowing and youthful skin
    • Reduced collagen, which causes poor skin elasticity
    • Aggravated skin problems like acne and eczema

How can you get beauty sleep?

Aim to get seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Here are a few tips on getting your beauty sleep:

  1. Wash your face before bedtime – Sleeping with a dirty face won’t give your skin a break from dirt, pollution, and other environmental stressors. This can then negatively affect your skin, which may result in irritation and other skin issues. So be sure to wash your face with a gentle cleanser or a product that is right for your skin type.
  2. Apply moisture – After removing makeup and washing your face, follow with a good moisturizer to retain skin moisture during sleep. Make sure to apply on overlooked areas like the neck and chest. You can also benefit from using an eye cream or anti-aging serum to fight or prevent signs of aging.
  3. Sleep on your back –Sleeping on your sides or on your stomach means applying constant pressure on your face. This may contribute to lines and wrinkles over time. It is advisable to sleep on your back to avoid pressing down your face against the pillow or pillowcase.
  4. Swap cotton pillowcases for silk ones – Cotton may feel comfortable, but it pulls and tugs on your skin. Moreover, it doesn’t allow your skin to slide, which then creates friction that could lead to unwanted creases. Silk or satin pillowcases are better options, as they are gentler on the skin and allow it to glide smoothly against the fabric.
  5. Keep your room cool – Cool temperatures enable you to fall asleep faster and have a restorative sleep. You can do this by lowering the air conditioner temperature, as well as wearing lightweight and breathable clothes. You can also experiment with the temperature that works best for you.
  6. Keep it dark and quiet – Darkness is important to sleep, as it signals the body that it is time to doze off.  You can keep the room dark by using blinds or curtains, or wearing a silk sleep mask.  Turning off electronics one hour before bedtime helps. You can also benefit from blocking outside noise with earplugs to improve sleep quality.
  7. Mind your mattress – Bad, old, or sagging mattresses could lead to back pain and compromised sleep quality. It is best to invest in a quality mattress that is neither too firm nor too soft. Buy the best one you can comfortably afford and choose a mattress that provides enough back support and contours to the shape of the body.
