Botulinum toxin type A (onabotulinumtoxinA or ONA) proved to be a safe and effective treatment for facial lines and wrinkles. Now, AbbVie, the company behind the popular injectable brand, revealed that the treatment has achieved positive topline results for the treatment of platysma prominence, a sign of aging that disrupts the neck, jawline, and lower face.
According to AbbVie’s press release, platysma prominence refers to the aesthetically unappealing disruption to the neck, jawline and lower face. It is attributed to the contraction of the platysma muscle, a flat, superficial muscle on the lower face and neck. This muscle plays a role in opening or moving your jaw, as well as forming various facial expressions.
Sachin Shridharani, MD, FACS, the lead clinical investigator for the second Phase 3 study, said platysma prominence appears as a part of the natural aging process. Patients with platysma prominence require non-invasive treatment to improve the symmetry between the upper and lower face. He added, “Treatment with a proven neurotoxin may help relax the platysma muscle and thus reduce the appearance of vertical neck bands and improve jawline definition.”
AbbVie’s Allergan unit recently revealed that the second Phase 3 trial of onabotulinumtoxinA for the treatment of moderate-to-severe platysma prominence met all primary and secondary endpoints. These results were also consistent with the findings from the prior or first Phase 3 trial.
The study involves 426 adults with moderate to severe platysma prominence. Both investigator and subject assessments noted that it achieved its primary endpoint of inducing higher rates of statistically significant improvement in patients compared with placebo (P < .0001).
According to Allergan, they will include the trial data as a part of a US FDA regulatory submission expected near the end of the year. If approved, AbbVie’s onabotulinumtoxinA will be the first and only neurotoxin for plasma prominence.
The neck is among the first areas of the body to show signs of aging. Apart from having thinner skin, it has less collagen than the face, as well as less natural oil that protects it from dryness and premature thinning. The neck area, furthermore, is constantly exposed to the sun and other environmental aggressors that can contribute to signs of aging.
