Acne Scars: Is There a Way to Remove Them Completely?

The problem with acne continues after the blemishes have healed or cleared up. While reddish and brownish marks can fade on their own after sometime, acne scars or those that leave textural changes can be difficult to treat. This is common with severe acne and can be quite distressing for those who have them.

If you too are battling with acne scars, you may be wondering if there is anything you can do to get rid of them. It may not be possible to erase those scars completely, but there are treatments to reduce their appearance significantly. It is also likely that your skin will improve or repair itself over the years.

Before treating acne scars

Acne scar treatment should only start once all your acne has completely healed. If you’re still dealing with active acne, it is important to wait until they have all cleared up. This is to avoid irritating the blemishes or make them worse. You can check out our previous blog to learn more about your acne treatment options.

When dealing with acne scars, be sure not to try different products like creams, masks, and lotions all at once. Doing so may cause further irritation and make yours scars more noticeable. The last thing you’d want to do is to make your acne scars worse or make current breakouts more likely to scar.

Aesthetic treatments to try

Here at Cutis Medical Laser Clinics in Singapore, we have a number of nonsurgical aesthetic procedures for treating acne scars. Continue reading to learn what you can expect from them:

Dermapen 4 (Microneedling)

Dermapen 4 is an advanced microneedling system that creates miniscule needle punctures in the top layer of the skin. It is an upgraded version with increased power and speed to vertically pierce the skin and address your skin woes. It promises safe and skin rejuvenation after just a few weeks of your microneedling procedure.

Microneedling causes micro-trauma in the skin, which then induces an immune response that results in the creation of new collagen. It also helps improve blood flow in the treated area, creating healthier skin and providing a healthy foundation for new skin.

This is used to treat and improve skin concerns such as:

  • Acne scarring
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Enlarged pores
  • Pigmentation and brown spots
  • Stretch marks

You may be glad to know that Dermapen 4 has a dedicated scar setting and protocols for revision of deep and atrophic scars. These include post-acne, burn, surgical, contracture, and striae scars.

VI Peel

VI Peel is a stronger type of chemical peel treatment that can clear acne skin conditions and reduce acne scars. It can also soften wrinkles, reduce freckles and age spots, and improve skin tone. VI Peel stimulates the production of new collagen, resulting in firmer and younger-looking skin.

The procedure involves an application of a chemical peel solution that goes into the skin’s deep layers. It may make the skin look tan or reddish for a short amount of time, but the procedure is relatively painless. You will have to go with the solution on your home and wait at least 4 hours before washing it off.

The actual peeling process can start one to two day after and can continue for a week. You can use a mineral foundation and post-peel cream to conceal the skin’s appearance during the peeling process. You will notice a clearer and healthier skin once the peeling is completed.

Cutera Pearl Resurfacing

Cutera Pearl Resurfacing is a non-invasive skin treatment for reducing the appearance of acne marks, hyperpigmentation wrinkles, and uneven texture. It can boost collagen production and give skin a healthy, “pearl-like” glow by treating both the dermis and epidermis layers of the skin.

The procedure works by treating the skin’s top layer with pulses of light in a pre-selected pattern. The laser then sends heat to the deeper layers, triggering the skin to form a natural protective dressing. After three to five days, this will peel off and reveal new and healthier skin.

Patients may notice overall skin clarity, softness, and smoothness after just one to two weeks. Most are satisfied after just one treatment, but you can opt for more sessions, depending on the severity of your skin concerns. The procedure can take a few minutes to an hour with minimal discomfort.

Laser Skin Genesis Therapy

Laser Genesis is an FDA-approved non-invasive laser treatment that can safely and effectively treat fine lines, wrinkles, large pores, and uneven skin texture. You can also turn to this procedure to reduce acne scars, treat rosacea, and diffuse redness. It can stimulate new cell growth and collagen production.

The treatment uses a laser handpiece that is positioned above an inch of your skin and is moved back and forth. You may experience a gentle warming on the skin’s surface during the procedure, but patients often describe the sensation as relaxing and therapeutic.

Laser Genesis has no downtime, which only means that it can reduce skin inflammation and help in the healing of scarring from acne. You can immediately return to your normal activities, but make sure to apply sunscreen when going out or participating in outdoor activities.
