Can You Anti-Age Your Eyes?

The area around your eyes displays the earliest signs of aging mainly because of the thin and delicate skin that surrounds it. Crow’s feet, dry skin, and fine lines can appear earlier that you expect, betraying your age or making you look older than you really are. Fortunately, there are things you can do to deal with these eye area concerns. Here are some tips for anti-aging your eye region:

Use an eye cream or serum

Apart from keeping the area moisturized and hydrated, eye creams can also help reduce some signs of visible aging. One good option is Dr. Sylvia’s ELASTIfirm Eye Cream and Serum, a medical-grade botanical remedy. This makes the eye area skin firmer and more elastic in appearance.

The said product also contains peptides to moisturize the area and protect it against free radical damage responsible for the formation of wrinkles. You can check out our previous blog to learn more about this eye cream and serum

Protect your eyes from the sun

The thin and delicate skin surrounding the eye makes it more susceptible to sun damage. This is why it is best to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen around the area. Just be sure to use a formula or product that won’t sting and is safe to use around the eye region.

It is also a good idea to wear sunglasses that offer UV protection. This will offer your eye area an extra line of defense against solar radiation.

Try to limit certain facial expressions

Repeated facial expressions involving the underlying eye muscles can lead to the formation of wrinkles. Constant contraction of the same muscles over time can make the lines settle, particularly if you always raise your eyebrows or squint your eyes.

You don’t have to go overboard and stop moving your face. It is only advisable to limit how often you make those expressions, especially if you want to prevent fine lines and wrinkles from forming around the area.

Get more sleep

Adequate and quality sleep can benefit your general health and skin, including the skin around your eyes. This is because your body repairs and renews itself while you doze off. It also helps the skin to make new collagen, which can prevent signs of aging.

Aim to get at least seven to nine hours of sleep each night. If you, for instance, are used to getting fewer than six hours, try to add more one to 3 hours. You are likely to notice positive effects on how you feel, including the way you look.

Use a silk pillowcase and stop sleeping on your side

Apart from getting more shut-eye, it is also a good idea to use a silk pillowcase while you doze off. This fabric is softer and more gentle than others, and won’t likely to tug on the skin, especially in the eye region.

You might also want to stop sleeping on your side, especially if you notice wrinkles and crow’s feet on one side than the other. If you can, try to sleep on your back; this prevents the face from rubbing up against the pillowcase.

Consider Botulinum Toxin (Botox)

Botulinum Toxin (commonly known as the brand Botox) is a safe US FDA-cleared anti-wrinkle treatment. It is used to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, including frown and forehead lines.

Botox works by temporarily blocking the signal from the nerve to muscles to relax the wrinkles formed by muscle contraction. It can take about two weeks to see its full effects, with results lasting for three to six months. However, they tend to last longer with repeated or touch-up treatments.

The whole treatment may take about 30 minutes. It may involve the use of topical anesthetic cream to improve patient comfort. There is also no downtime required, so you can immediately go back to your normal activities.

Try Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers are safe injectable gels that are used to decrease the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles, and eye bags. They can also plump up the lips, contour the face, enhance cheekbones, and increase the height of the nose bridge.

Here at Cutis Medical Laser Clinics in Singapore, we have fillers made of substances that are naturally found in the body, making them safe and effective. These include hyaluronic acid or HA (Juvederm) and calcium-based microspheres (Radiesse).

The fillers work by filling up the spaces caused by unwanted lines and folds. There is also a special technique called Liquid Lift, which is used for injecting advanced dermal fillers to lift and contour facial features.

Both offer immediate results that can last for 9 to 12 months for Juvederm and 9 to 15 months for Radiesse. However, this will still depend on the type of fillers and number of syringes used.
