Dealing with the 5 Common Skin Issues for Men

While women are more concerned about skincare, this doesn’t mean that men don’t struggle with skin issues. Guys tend to keep silent or ignore these problems, along with the hope that they’ll get better on their own. Some are also embarrassed to see a dermatologist or an aesthetic doctor, thinking that it is a predominantly “girl thing”.

There is no need to be ashamed though. If you’re a man dealing with skin problems, getting help or tweaking your skincare routine can have tangible and intangible benefits. Aside from healthier and younger-looking skin, you can feel good and more confident about your own self.

Here are some of the common skin issues for men and a few tips for dealing with them.

1. Razor burn

For men who frequently shave, skin irritation due to razor burn is a common problem. Common symptoms include redness, itchiness, small red bumps, and a hot sensation. Razor burn is likely if you use an old or a clogged razor, shave an area multiple times, and do so without using a cream or a lubricant.

Here are a few tips that can prevent razor burn:

  • Wet skin before shaving (you can do this after showering).
  • Don’t use a dull or a filthy razor.
  • Always use a cream, gel, or other shaving lubricants.
  • Shave in the direction of the hair growth.
  • Rinse after each swipe of the blade.
  • Rinse shaven skin with cold water and apply moisturizer.

2. Acne and oily skin

Men have larger pore size and higher sebum production than women. This is also the reason why their skin looks oilier or feels greasier than the opposite sex. Higher sebum production, furthermore, can clog the pores and result in breakouts or acne. This is then exacerbated by the fluctuations of male hormone levels in the body.

If you’re dealing with adult acne or oily skin, it is recommended to:

  • Wash your face daily (twice a day) and after exercising.
  • Use a facial wash (not a regular bar soap) that is right for your skin type.
  • Use products with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.
  • Consider using blotting papers to control oiliness.
  • See an aesthetic doctor if OTC acne products don’t seem to make any difference.

3. Dark circles or bags under eyes

Genetics and aging play a role in the appearance of dark circles, as well as sleep deprivation and drinking too much alcohol. These are also easier to spot in men as most guys don’t wear concealers or makeup. Another sad part is these bags or dark circles can make you look older, tired, and stressed.

Dermal fillers can help improve eye bags and dark circles. They plump up the treated area for a natural, refreshed, and younger-looking appearance. At Cutis Medical Laser Clinics, we use fillers made with hyaluronic acid (Juvéderm), which is also a naturally occurring substance in the body.

Fillers can also soften the appearance of lines and wrinkles. They can restore volume loss, reduce the look of folds, and strengthen a weak chin or jawline. Depending on the type of fillers used, the results can last for six months to a year or even more.

4. Skin redness

Facial redness can be due to allergies, broken capillaries, or a condition called rosacea. Poor skincare, temperature changes, bad lifestyle habits, or even stress can also contribute to this issue. The same is also true for having sensitive skin or using products with harsh chemicals, dyes, fragrances, and preservatives.

If you’re dealing with rosacea, there is no cure for this condition, but there are treatments. There are also different types of rosacea. A skin or aesthetic doctor can determine if you have this condition and tailor a treatment plan based on your concerns and needs.

5. Fine lines and wrinkles

These are a lot more common among the older demographic. Men usually get horizontal wrinkles on their foreheads and vertical lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines). These can give the face a tired or an angry appearance, especially if the wrinkles are deep or prominent.

Botox or “Bro-tox” is effective in softening or relaxing these lines. It works by blocking the signal from a nerve to a muscle to temporarily paralyze the muscles responsible for making wrinkles. You may be glad to know that more men are now getting Botox injected to look younger and energized, as well as remain competitive professionally.

Other reasons why men are getting Botox include:

  • Enhance attractiveness
  • Keep up with their (younger) friends or colleagues
  • Improve dating prospect
  • Look good in dating apps or social media
  • Look refreshed and masculine
