Dermal Fillers for Men: A More Attractive Facial Profile

While dermal fillers are more popular in women, men are joining in the trend too. This is especially for those who want to improve their facial features and slow signs of aging. Many are tapping into the power of this injectable, as more men are now realizing the importance of looking more confident to stay competitive.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels commonly made with hyaluronic acid or HA. This is a naturally occurring substance in the body, responsible for keeping the tissues lubricated. HA-based fillers like Juvéderm are usually soft and gel-like. They are injected beneath the skin surface to add fullness and volume.

Fillers work by imitating a substance in the body (like hyaluronic acid) to rejuvenate the skin. They boost your body’s supply of HA (or other substances) to provide structure and replace lost volume. Dermal fillers can also reduce the look of lines and wrinkles, as well as plump up the lips, fill in sunken cheeks, and strengthen a weak facial profile.

At Cutis Medical Laser Clinics, we both have fillers made with HA and calcium-based microspheres (Radiesse). The latter can correct folds and wrinkles in the face and hands, as well as lift and sculpt cheekbones. Radiesse is also a bio-stimulator, which can stimulate the body to produce collagen.

Both brands produce immediate results. Juvéderm lasts for about 6 to 12 months, while Radiesse lasts approximately 18 months. HA-based fillers, however, are the only ones reversible if you’re not happy with the results. An enzyme called hyaluronidase is used to dissolve the filler.

How are dermal filler injections different for men?

Women often get dermal fillers to plump up their lips and add volume to their cheeks. Many also use them, to soften their lines and folds to look more refreshed and rejuvenated. Some women also turn to fillers to make their face look more feminine, or create a softer appearance in the jawline.

Men, on the other hand, get fillers to have a more defined or chiseled facial profile. They choose to enhance masculine features like a strong and defined jawline, which is associated with power, confidence, and dominance. Chin fillers offer an almost instant solution, as they can reshape the lower face to give a sharper and more youthful look.

Creating a more attractive facial profile

When getting fillers, men want a more subtle rejuvenated appearance to avoid feminizing the face. They also want to look their best just like women, but they do not want overly done or unnatural-looking results. Fillers for men are ideal for softening prominent or deep wrinkles and strengthening soft or weak contours.

Here’s how filler can give men a more attractive facial profile:

  • Reduce or improve jowls and folds
  • Minimize deep wrinkles and fine lines
  • Add more definition to chin or jawline
  • Add volume to the midface
  • Reduce dark circles and tear troughs
  • Improve facial symmetry (like enhancing nose shape)

Are dermal fillers right for you?

If you’re a man considering fillers, there is nothing to be ashamed of. Besides, looking good outside can make you feel more confident. This is beneficial when competing with younger guys for jobs and promotions. Looking and feeling better can also help you in the love and dating department.

The first step in deciding whether dermal fillers are right for you is to schedule a consultation with an aesthetic doctor. This is to discuss your desired results and determine what type of injectables or fillers are safe and suitable for you. Ideal candidates are those who:

  • Are generally healthy
  • Want to correct mild to moderate imperfections
  • Have realistic expectations or are not seeking permanent results
  • Don’t smoke and are committed to keeping good skin health

What men can expect from dermal filler treatments

The treatment usually starts with cleansing your face and applying a topical anesthetic to make the procedure more comfortable. Some fillers like Juvéderm also contain lidocaine to numb the area. A needle is used to inject the fillers into the areas of concern. The injections are strategically placed to achieve your goals.

The procedure can take 15 to 30 minutes or longer, depending on the number of areas to be treated. There are side effects around the injection site like bruising or swelling, but this clears within a few days. You can see immediate improvements, but it can take two weeks for the fillers to completely settle into your skin.
