Do You Need Both Cleanser and Toner?

When it comes to cleansing the face, most people choose to do so with just face cleansers. Toners are usually deemed unnecessary, even though the right one can be a great addition to your skincare regimen. Apart from removing the last traces of dirt and excess oil left after cleansing, toners also prep the skin for other products you’ll apply.

But, are both cleansers and toners necessary for thoroughly cleansing your skin? What would you gain by applying toner after cleansing and before moisturizing? Is it okay to skip it and just use a cleanser that provides deep, comprehensive cleansing? Continue reading to find out if you need both cleanser and toner in your skincare routine.

What is a cleanser or cleansing?

The primary use of a face cleanser is to remove excess oil, makeup, dirt, dead skin cells, and other impurities from your face. It refreshes the skin and helps unclog pores, as well as reduce your chances of developing certain skin issues such as acne. A face cleanser should be a daily part of your regimen in keeping your skin clean and healthy.

Face cleansers can be used in the morning and night, and after working out or a sweat session. It is important not to over-cleanse the face, as it increases the risk of dryness and irritation. This can also make your skin overcompensate by producing excess oil, which can mix with the bacteria and dead skin cells, and trigger acne.

Cleansers come in different types, so it is important to choose a formula that is right for you and your skin type. In many cases, soap-free and gentle cleansers are great options, as they cause less interruption or change to the skin barrier and pH. You shouldn’t also aim for a “squeaky-clean feeling”, as it can lead to dry patches and irritation.

What is toner or toning?

The main purpose of toner is to restore the skin’s pH balance to its natural acidic state. Modern formulas are an upgrade from traditional ones, which were specifically used to remove excess oil and dirt and are suitable for those with acne-prone skin. Toners today can still do the same, but they can also calm, nourish, and brighten the skin.

Aside from removing leftover dirt and debris on your face and rebalancing the skin’s pH, some formulas can also reduce the appearance of visible pores. They can be helpful in constricting pores to minimize dirt and oil buildup that may occur throughout the day. They can also add a layer of protection, as well as make the skin look radiant.

Just like cleansers, toners also come in different types and formulas. Toners are especially useful for those with oily and acne-prone skin or those who need extra cleansing due to makeup. There are, however, toners specially formulated for dry and sensitive skin. Just make sure to avoid those with irritating ingredients such as alcohol and synthetic fragrances.

Do you need both?

The right cleanser is a must for cleansing the face and toner can be a great addition, depending on what the skin needs. Some forgo the latter and you can do the same, but do take note that the right type of toner can bring benefits to your skin. It can do more than make the skin firmer or rebalance the skin’s pH level after cleansing. Toners can help:

  • Restore the skin’s pH
  • Soothe the skin
  • Moisturize the skin
  • Prime or prep the skin
  • Improve or target certain skin issues
