Don’t Fall Victim to These Five Skincare Myths

While the Internet does provide helpful skin care tips, there are also blogs and websites that share and capitalize on falsehoods. It is easy to fall victim to these skincare myths, as the abundance of content online can sometimes make it difficult for us to separate fact from fiction.

Continue reading to learn the common skincare myths:

Myth #1: Anti-aging products are only for old people.

If you want to combat aging, it is better to take preventative measures and start using anti-aging products in your 20s. This, however, doesn’t mean using creams and lotions designed for older skin. You can start with those with potent ingredients that can help keep your skin young. You can ask your dermatologist for recommendations.

Myth #2: Natural and organic ingredients are better for your skin.

Although many people believe that organic ingredients are kinder and better to your skin, there is no scientific basis for this belief. Besides, many of these “natural ingredients” are diluted and processed to be safe to use. Also, just because a product contains chemicals or synthetic ingredients doesn’t make it bad for your skin.

Myth #3: You don’t need sun protection when it’s cloudy. (Skincare Myths)

Sunrays can penetrate through the clouds and damage your skin. This can cause premature aging, along with dark spots and skin discoloration. This is why you still need to apply sunscreen even when it is not sunny. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF30 or higher.

Myth #4: Oily skin doesn’t need moisturizers.

External factors like UV rays, pollution, and excessive cleansing can damage the barrier of both oily and normal skin. This causes a loss of moisture, which can then increase your skin’s sebum production and make your face look shiny. This is why moisturizer is still necessary. Just be sure to choose oil-free, lightweight, and non-comedogenic formulas.

Myth #5: Toothpaste can get rid of your pimples.

Toothpaste may have some components that can dry the skin and help minimize your zits, but this home remedy can do more harm than good. This is mainly because the product is made for your teeth, not your skin. Dabbing some of it on your acne can irritate your skin, potentially causing more flare-ups.

Give Your Skin the Right TLC It Deserves

Other than ditching these skincare myths, you can also take better care of your skin by undergoing aesthetic treatments. This is especially true if you have dull/rough skin or suffer from pigmentation, wrinkles, and other signs of aging.

Here at Cutis Medical Laser Clinics in Singapore, we offer a number of nonsurgical aesthetic procedures that can help you achieve clear, beautiful, and younger-looking skin. Here are some treatments worth considering:

1. Ultherapy (to counteract the signs of aging)

Ultherapy is an FDA-approved ultrasound treatment that can gently lift and tighten the skin from the brow, to the face and jawline and to the chest. It works by delivering time-tested focused ultrasound energy in the skin’s foundational layers. This stimulates new collagen regeneration, resulting in a visible yet gentle lift over time.

Check out our previous post to learn what makes Ultherapy an effective non-invasive face lifting procedure.

2. Laser Genesis (for vibrant and healthy skin)

Laser Genesis skin therapy is his US FDA-approved treatment that uses non-invasive laser technology. It can effectively treat fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin texture, as well as diffuse redness and scars.  Furthermore, the procedure can minimize the appearance of enlarged facial pores, which then results in clearer and healthier looking skin.

3. Limelight IPL (to combat dark spots and sun damage)

Limelight IPL uses an FDA-cleared “intense pulse light” technology to address skin surface problems such as dark spots, freckles, and pigmentation. It works by delivering pulses of light at the skin to draw dark spots and patches on the top layers. This will then scab and fall off after three to four days.

The brown spots may turn darker after the procedure, but this is normal. It may look like that the pigmentation has gotten worse, but it will soon get better after a few days, revealing brighter skin. You just need to avoid sun exposure and artificial tanning at least two weeks before and after the treatment.

4. Cutera Pearl Resurfacing (for complete skin rejuvenation)

The Cutera Pearl combines the impact of resurfacing lasers with the gentleness and safety of non-invasive procedures for a blemish-free skin. It can treat melasma, sun damaged skin, and acne scars. It also reduces wrinkles, rough and uneven skin texture as well as freckles and pigmentation for a healthy, pearl-like glow.

5. VI Peel (for clearing acne skin conditions)

VI Peel is a stronger type of chemical peel formulated with synergistic blend of ingredients. This is designed to improve skin quality by clearing acne skin conditions, softening wrinkles, and eliminating age spots. It can also reduce/eliminate acne scars, and stimulate the production of collagen for a firmer and younger-looking skin.

You can read our previous blog to learn more about VI Peel and how it can improve your skin.
