Record-breaking temperatures have affected nations in Southeast Asia, including Singapore. While the heat has tempted some of us to just stay indoors, many also want to take advantage of the weather to do outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming, and going to the beach. We also need vitamin D, which is best obtained from sun exposure.
The issue, of course, is too much heat and sun exposure can increase the risk of skin damage and skin cancer. So, how can you get that sun-kissed glow and get your daily dose of vitamin D while staying safe? Our very own Dr. Sylvia Ramirez shares a few tips via Vogue Singapore in an article via Azrin Tan.
Protect your skin outdoors and indoors – Extended exposure whether you are indoors or outdoors may result in the buildup of DNA damage in skin cells. This can cause photoaging and increase your risk of developing skin cancer.
Time your sun exposure – Embrace the golden hour or get your necessary dose of vitamin D in the early morning or late afternoon when UV intensity is reduced. This helps minimize UVB exposure (needed for vitamin D) while also lowering your risk of skin injuries associated with UVB rays.
Protect yourself in fashion – Accessorize and sun protect your skin with wide-brimmed hats, fashion-forward sunglasses with 100% UV protection, or clothing with Ultraviolet Protection Factor, which is designed to block UV rays.
Use a systematic approach when applying sunscreen – Dr. Sylvia recommends applying about two milligrams of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin. A dollop the size of a 20-cent coin is recommended for the face alone; about two tablespoons (shot glass) is ideal for the face and body. Other helpful tips from Dr. Sylvia include:
