Facial Muscle Stimulation: For Skin Firming, Tightening, & Toning

As we age, our skin loses its firmness and elasticity, causing it to sag or droop. Over time, this can cause narrowing cheekbones, less volume in the cheeks, and a baggy appearance around the chin or jawline. Folds, wrinkles, and creases also become more prominent and give the face a sad or tired appearance.

Several factors contribute to facial aging or the changes we see on our faces over time. These include:

  • A decline in collagen and elastin – The body produces less and less of these essential skin proteins as we age. This can then make the skin thinner and less elastic, as well as contribute to the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin.
  • A decrease and shift in facial fat – With aging, facial fat moves and decreases, gathering around the lower part of the face, including the two sides of the jaw and neck. This leads to a baggy appearance and more prominent lines and wrinkles.
  • Weakened facial muscles – Repetitive motions and expressions can cause the facial muscles to get weaker, leading to the loss of muscle tone and a sagging appearance. Both thinning skin and the loss of muscle tone contribute to a less defined jawline or facial profile.
  • Bone loss or changes in bone structure – These can alter the contour and dimension of the face. The area around the eyes gets bigger and you may also notice a reduction in the angle of the brow bone. An aging bone structure can lead to sunken eye areas, lowered brow angle, and a less sculpted jawline.

Certain lifestyle factors can also contribute to facial aging, as well as exacerbate volume loss. These include smoking, extreme dieting, chronic stress, and prolonged and unprotected sun exposure.

Toning the facial muscles help

As aging affects different structures in the face, it is important to have a treatment plan that targets multiple layers, like the facial muscles. In most cases, this involves a combination of treatments including injectables and energy-based procedures. Facial muscle stimulation also does wonders, especially in promoting skin firming, tightening, and toning.

Facial muscle stimulation at Cutis involves the use of a device that combines dermal heating and muscle contractions. This goes beyond conventional EMS or electrical muscle stimulation, which uses low faradic currents delivered to the skin. It can target specific muscle groups to address signs of aging and rejuvenate the skin.

Facial sculpting with FACESTIM®

Facestim® is a new addition to our clinic’s roster of non-invasive skin tightening and lifting procedures. It treats different muscle groups to sculpt the face, correct certain asymmetries, and promote a more youthful appearance. It offers a unique approach to facial rejuvenation by combining two procedures in one technology.

Facial sculpting with FACESTIM works by combining bipolar radiofrequency heating with muscle contractions based on diathermocontraction. Diathermocontraction is a combination of diathermy (deep dermal heating) + deep muscle contractions. It can reach the deeper layers of the muscles without causing any side effects.

The aim of FACESTIM® is to:

  • Restore the harmony of facial volume
  • Improve the texture and appearance of the skin
  • Enhance the natural features of the face

How FACESTIM® promotes a youthful appearance: The combination of RF heating and muscle contraction targets the muscle fibers to strengthen them, as well as optimize lymphatic drainage.

  • RF heating – generates heat in the tissues, which contributes to collagen denaturation. This assists in producing new collagen, which is beneficial in tissue remodeling and shrinking of the lax connective tissue.
  • Muscle contractions – stimulate the inner facial muscles, which helps firm, tighten, and tone the skin. This can also improve the skin’s texture and quality.

Facestim® can help you achieve:

  • Lifted eyebrows for a more refreshed appearance
  • Lifted mid-face and reduced nasolabial folds for a healthier and more youthful look
  • Firmer jawline and neck area

Combining FACESTIM® with other treatments: Another great thing about FACESTIM® is you can combine it with injectables such as dermal fillers and botulinum toxin. This is beneficial in restructuring the face while also allowing practitioners to use less injectables for contouring and volumizing the face. This provides a more natural result.

You can also combine FACESTIM® with other devices such as ultrasound, radiofrequency microneedling, and chemical peels to enhance the final results.
