Fighting and Preventing Wrinkles in Men

For some men, a few lines and wrinkles can add character and contribute to a more distinguished appearance. This, however, is not the same, if you have too many of them or have deeper and more prominent lines. More pronounced lines can make men look and feel older than they actually are.

In this post, we discuss the causes of wrinkles in men and what you can do to prevent them or even improve the appearance of existing lines.

What causes or contributes to wrinkles?

There are a number of things that can contribute to the formation of wrinkles in men. These include:

  • Aging – lines and wrinkles are a normal part of the aging process; the skin naturally loses its firmness and elasticity over time.
  • Sun/UV exposure – ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun damage skin cells and accelerate the aging process.
  • Repetitive facial expressions – years of making the same expressions can cause those lines and creases to settle on your skin.
  • Smoking – it impairs blood flow to the skin and causes it to sag and wrinkle prematurely.
  • Certain lifestyle habits – some habits can compromise your skin’s health and contribute to wrinkles. These include excessive alcohol drinking, sleep deprivation, poor diet, and having a sedentary lifestyle.

Preventing wrinkles

Avoiding the controllable factors that can lead to wrinkles is helpful in preventing their formation. This is also beneficial in keeping them from getting worse. Here are a few other things that can help:

Don’t forget to wear sunscreen

As UV rays cause skin damage and premature wrinkling, it is only advisable to wear sunscreen daily. This is applicable even on cloudy days as the majority of UV rays can penetrate through clouds. Be sure to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Get adequate sleep

Your body goes into regeneration mode at night, enabling the skin to repair daytime damage. Sleep, furthermore, helps the body in making more collagen, which is beneficial in keeping the skin firm and supple. This is why lack of sleep means compromising the skin’s ability to repair itself and recover from daily stressors.

Moisturize daily

Moisturizing is not just for women; it is also an important step in men’s skin care regimen. The right moisturizer can replenish lost moisture, as well as provide anti-aging benefits. Just be sure to choose a product that is right for your skin type. Use an oil-free or water-based formula if you have oily skin and a rich one if you have dry skin.

Use an anti-aging cream or serum

While the application of anti-aging creams and serums may not seem manly, it is recommended in combatting wrinkles. Choose a product that is loaded in antioxidants that are helpful in fighting free radicals, which are known to damage the skin. You can consult a skin or an aesthetic doctor for product recommendations.

Engage in a healthy lifestyle

This means ditching bad habits and adopting lifestyle routines that promote good overall health. These include:

  • Eating a balanced diet
  • Exercising most days of the week
  • Keeping stress in check
  • Limiting alcohol consumption
  • Quitting smoking or never start smoking in the first place

What if you already have prominent wrinkles

It is common for some men to have deeper or more pronounced wrinkles on the forehead and between the brows. If you’re bothered with some of the lines on your face and want to improve their appearance, don’t hesitate to consider an anti-wrinkle injectable like Botox

What is Botox: Popularly known as the brand Botox, Botulinum toxin is an FDA-cleared anti-wrinkle treatment used for dynamic wrinkles. It can treat lines formed due to repetitive muscle contractions like frown lines and forehead lines. Botox can also help with wrinkles in the corner of the eye and upper lip wrinkles.

How it works: This works by temporarily blocking the signal from a nerve to a muscle using a neurotoxin protein. This paralyzes the muscles responsible for the movement, which then softens and relaxes the wrinkles. The whole procedure can take less than 30 minutes and involves the use of a numbing cream to improve patient comfort.

How long will you see results: It can take about two weeks to see the full effects of Botox. The results can last between three and six months or longer with touch-up treatments or repeated injections.

What should you remember: Be sure to look for a trained and experienced injector with a conservative approach in administering the injectable. This is important if you want to achieve a natural look and avoid unwanted side effects.
