Good Night’s Sleep: Can it Prevent Your Skin from Aging Faster?

You probably know that adequate night sleep improves skin health, but it remains a mystery as to why and how a good slumber does this. Well, many amazing things happen while you snooze, one of which is allowing your skin to repair and regenerate itself.

Your skin during day and night

The time of the day can detect the mode of your skin cells. During daylight hours, they are in defense mode, defending the cells from solar radiation. Daytime defenses also protect the skin from pollution and other stressors that can lead to premature aging due to skin cell damage.

At nighttime, on the other hand, your body goes into regeneration mode. This enables the skin cells to concentrate on replacing damaged cells and producing new ones. While you’re snoozing away at night, the levels of stress hormones (cortisol) drop, which helps in repairing daytime damage.

Your skin reaches its peak defense mode between 7 and 11 in the morning. Peak regeneration mode, however, is between 9 pm and midnight. Chronic disruptions in sleep or regular poor sleep can negatively affect skin and overall health. It can also increase your risk of serious medical conditions.

Beauty sleep is not a myth

As mentioned before, your skin goes into reparative mode while you doze off. It allows your skin to recharge and recuperate from your daytime activities. Here are the things that happen to your skin while you’re sleeping:

  • Your body makes more collagen, which keeps the skin looking firm and supple.
  • Your skin’s renewal rate almost doubles at night during your sleep.
  • It relaxes your muscles, which helps in boosting blood flow, restoring energy, and growing tissue.
  • It gives your skin a break from UV damage, pollution, and other environmental stressors.
  • Reduced cortisol levels during sleeps means helping you ward off stress-related skin problems.
  • Your brain produces melatonin, a natural hormone with anti-aging properties.
  • The skin is more receptive to the active ingredients in your skincare products.
  • During sleep, the brain clears out harmful toxins, which is beneficial in reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Supplementing sleep

There is no doubt that a good night’s sleep can help your skin look younger. It is still important, however, to nourish your skin with serums and anti-aging products. This is especially true if you notice signs of skin aging like fine lines and wrinkles. You can also benefit from trying non-invasive skin tightening procedures.

At Cutis Laser Clinics in Singapore, we offer a number of nonsurgical procedures that can lift and tighten skin. Here are some treatments worth considering:

Ultherapy

Ultherapy is a US FDA-cleared procedure that uses the power ultrasound energy to lift and tighten the skin brow, chin, neck, and chest. It helps stimulate collagen production within the skin’s foundation and reverse the effect of gravity. Ultherapy is also the only treatment with FDA indication for a non-invasive lift.

Precise ultrasound energy bypasses the skin’s surface and treats its deeper layers. The controlled ultrasound energy also stimulates collagen production, resulting in a significant tissue lift over a two to three month period. Check out our previous post to learn more about Ultherapy and how it can give you a facelift without surgery.

Titan Skin Tightening

Titan uses a US FDA-cleared light energy to stimulate collagen production deep beneath the skin’s surface. It can help reverse the signs of aging by lifting, toning, and tightening the skin. It is a great option for improving lines and folds, as well as lax skin in the face, arms, abdomen, and legs.

It uses a handpiece that offers a uniform distribution of light for heating the deep dermis. This results in an immediate collagen contraction, which then makes the skin tighter. You may also be glad to know that the treated area is protected throughout the procedure using continuous cooling.

You can also combine Titan with Laser Genesis in our 2D Skin Rejuvenation. Laser Genesis uses a laser technology that can promote healthy and vibrant skin. The combination of two treatments can improve skin texture, minimize pores, and provide firmness of the skin.

Exilis Ultra

Exilis Ultra is an FDA-cleared device that simultaneously combines monopolar radiofrequency and ultrasound energy to address face and body concerns. It can tighten the skin, promote collagen production, and reduce fat cells. It features two unique applicators that come in two sizes: small and big.

The small applicator heats the deep layers of the skin to generate new collagen production. This can reduce wrinkles and tighten the skin on the face and other smaller areas of the body like hands and arms.

The big one, on the other hand, uses the same technology but has a controlled cooling system. This allows the heat to go into the deeper layers to disturb the fat cells and trigger natural cell death. The cooling feature enables the device to target body parts that need contouring or tightening.
