How to Avoid the Frozen Face Look

Have you seen too many “Botulinum Toxin (or more commonly known as Botox) horror stories” and now you’re afraid to get the treatment? While there are complications that occur with any procedure, non-invasive facial treatments like Botox and dermal fillers are both safe and effective – if placed under experienced and skilled hands.

The dreaded ‘frozen face’ develops when a patient is unable to move their forehead or part of their mouth as a result of their Botox treatment. The results often appear robotic and not natural at all.

A frozen face can occur due to errors made by the injector or when too much Botox units are injected. To achieve a naturally-youthful look, try to follow these simple tips.

1. See a Reputable and Skilled Injector

One of the most important things to consider before getting Botox or facial fillers is who will be administering them. Having an experienced injector who knows the right amount of Botox units to inject is key if you want to achieve a natural look.

When choosing a skin specialist, consider how much experience they have, what training and education they’ve had, and what is their reputation is in the business. At the Cutis Laser Clinics, Dr. Sylvia Ramirez is US Board Certified and has more than 20 years of medical experience in the U.S. and internationally.

2. Don’t Over Treat Your Face

As Botox and fillers are only temporary, you may feel tempted to make a drastic difference in your facial expression by wanting to have more than necessary. Over treating or overdosage can result in a “frozen face” look that significantly limits your ability to move facial muscles.

Talk to your doctor and set the right expectations. If you’ve never had a Botox injection or fillers in Singapore before, start with a small amount to see if you like the results. You can always add more units or syringes later if you’re not satisfied. Depending on the product used, the results may last several months to two years.

3. Limit Botox Appointments

You may go to a Botox clinic that wants you to make repeated appointments simply for them to earn. But too many Botox sessions could result in the ‘frozen face’ look. In some instances, patients become impatient and want quicker results or some even wants to do it as soon as possible to sustain the results. They may undergo treatment too frequently in attempt to get rid of every fine line and wrinkle.

Make sure to talk to your doctor about the frequency of treatments you’ll need to maintain results. You can top-up your Botox units at least 3 months after your last treatment. Remember to have realistic goals that aim to achieve a natural, youthful look.

4. Take Note of Asymmetry

Many people have areas of their face that are asymmetrical, whether it’s one eyebrow that’s slightly higher than the other or a side of the nose that looks wider.

Fillers and Botox in Singapore can be used to correct asymmetry without causing a ‘frozen face’ look. Tell your doctor your concerns about asymmetry to determine the best course of treatment.

Both Botox as well as dermal fillers can help enhance your look. However, each comes with their own set of risks and benefits. Make sure to communicate to your doctor your concerns and expectations to avoid disappointing results.

While Botox side effects are uncommon, they may include slight bruising, redness, or swelling at the injection site. Fillers can have similar side effects.
