Hydrated Skin is Healthy Skin

When skin is well hydrated, it not only looks healthy, but it’s also glowing. Well-hydrated skin (or having enough water in the outermost layer of the epidermis) means that the skin is more flexible, resilient, and more vibrant.

Keeping our skin hydrated enables our protective barrier to remain intact and makes the skin less prone to roughness, wrinkles, and fine lines.

Hydrating vs. Moisturizing the Skin

The term hydration may be often confused with moisture (and sometimes used interchangeably), but they are not actually the same. Continue reading to learn the differences between hydrating and moisturizing.

Hydration refers to the water content in the cells that makes the skin look plump and reflect light. Not enough water content means that the cells are dehydrated, making the skin looks dull with fine lines or wrinkles. Hydrating the skin means introducing water in the cells, improving its ability to absorb nutrients and moisture.

Moisturizing, on the other hand, is all about sealing and locking in moisture to form the protective barrier of the skin. The use of moisturizers can also prevent water loss and keep the skin soft and smooth. This is particularly beneficial for those with flaky, dry, or peeling skin.

Dry Skin

If you have dry and flaky skin, it could mean that your skin is not producing adequate lipid cells to create a protective barrier. This is where the use of moisturizer can be helpful, especially in trapping in moisture. The common ingredients in moisturizers are water, petrolatum, and emollients like plant oils.

Moisturizers are available in lotions, creams, and gels and some can moisturize and hydrate at the same time. It all comes down to finding the right product for your skin type. Dermatologists suggest using an oil- and fragrance-free moisturizer for your face, as well as applying a light layer for the day and more during the night.

Dehydrated Skin

If your skin, however, has a lackluster complexion with noticeable fine lines, it is likely that is dehydrated. Hydrators can help restore your skin’s plump appearance and make it look younger. They usually have glycerin or hyaluronic acid, which helps in absorbing water and binding it onto your skin.

Many serums today contain hyaluronic acid and can add an extra dose of hydration into the skin. While using the right skin care is important to maintain good skin at home, getting additional help from dermal fillers namely, Juvederm Volite, will be beneficial to further boost the quality and hydration of your skin.

So what are dermal fillers and how can it help hydrate your skin?

Dermal fillers in Singapore are injectable gels that are commonly injected deep in the skin to help restore volume by “filling in” sunken areas of the face. It’s typically used to treat sunken cheeks and temples as well as to reduce dark circles and nasolabial folds.

But in the case of a skin booster treatment such as Volite, it is injected superficially near the top layer of the skin. It’s injected not as deep as a normal filler but it can reach deeper (compared to skin care products) to provide hydration in the skin layer giving you a youthful glow.

Juvederm Volite skin booster for skin hydration

Juvederm Volite is an innovative anti-aging injectable treatment that can be used on the face, hand, neck, and décolletage. It can minimize the appearance of fine lines, as well as hydrate dry skin, reduce scaly, rough texture, and even out skin depressions.

This injectable contains hyaluronic acid (HA) to promote supple and healthier skin. When HA is injected, it combines with the water in the skin to improve its hydration, and elasticity. Studies suggest that it can last up to nine months and provide significant improvement in skin quality for up to six months.

Juvederm Volite uses VYCROSS® technology, a manufacturing process that provides a high concentration of crosslinked HA. This enables the substance to stay soft, creating a smooth consistency gel that flows easily into the skin. This also helps maintain long-lasting and natural effects.

It can be used as a skin booster treatment and is suitable if you have dry skin, wrinkles, and fine lines, as well as mild laxity on the face, neck, and hands. You may notice plumping effects after the procedure, but full results are visible after two weeks.

Other types of fillers that can help your skin

At Cutis Laser Clinics in Singapore, we use fillers made of naturally occurring substances in the body like hyaluronic acid (Juvederm) and calcium-based microspheres (Radiesse).

  • Hyaluronic acid or HA-based fillers like Juvederm can be used to improve fine lines, eye bags, and nasolabial folds. They can also add volume in the cheeks, fill the lips, augment the chin, and increase the height of the nose bridge without surgery.
  • Calcium-based microspheres like Radiesse fillers can plump the skin and replenish volume lost over time. It can also be used to improve lines on the face, add volume to the cheeks, and fill the lips and nasolabial folds. Radiesse is also a bio-stimulator that can stimulate your body to produce collagen over time.

The use of such substances makes the procedure safe and with low risk of allergy. It is also good to know that dermal fillers are metabolized by the body and slowly disappear over time. Results can also be seen almost immediately, making the skin looks firmer and rejuvenated.

A Word of Caution

To avoid complications, be sure to trust only a skilled and trained injector or aesthetic doctor. Do take note that injecting these fillers require careful technique, attention to detail, and artistic skills to achieve natural-looking results.

Common side effects may include bruising and swelling after the procedure. It is also advisable to avoid taking fish oil, high doses of Vitamin E supplements, aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications two weeks before your procedure, to minimize the risk of bruising.
