Hyperpigmentation: Does it Go Away on Its Own?

Hyperpigmentation is one main barrier to clear and glowing skin. As these spots and patches appear darker than your natural complexion, they can give your skin a dull, unhealthy, and tired appearance.

If dark spots have long been a concern for you, you may wonder if they will ever go away or if there is anything you can do to fade them faster. Read on and find out.

Does hyperpigmentation improve over time?

The short answer is yes, but not always. Pigmentation can improve over time, but this will still depend on factors like the cause and severity of the condition. The contrast in color between the pigmentation and your natural complexion will also play a part. This is also the reason why recovery rates vary from patient to patient.

  • PIH or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (acne marks, not scars) – This can take about one to three months to fade. There are, however, cases where it can take several months to a year. The fading process will also take longer if there is a significant contrast between your marks and skin tone.
  • Melasma It can also fade on its own, particularly if the cause is pregnancy or birth control pills. In such cases, the pigmentation can improve after you give birth or stop taking the pills. But then again, there are also instances where people can have it for years and melasma does not go away.
  • Age spots/ sun spots – These usually require treatments to fade over time. As sunspots are due to sun exposure and damage, the use of sunscreen can help increase response to the pigmentation treatment. It can also prevent future spots or keep existing ones from becoming more prominent.

What’s the role of proper skin care regimen and skin lightener?

If your pigmentation bothers you or does not improve, treatments are available. A skin specialist may recommend a skin care regimen composed of a sunscreen, moisturizers, and skin lighteners. Common skin lightening agents include vitamin C, hydroquinone, kojic acid, and tretinoin.

Skin lightening products can fade age spots, melasma, and other unwanted pigmentation. They can also be combined with other prescription medications to further reduce dark spots or increase cell turnover.

Can oral supplements help?

Certain oral supplements like Diamond Tomato Rx are also beneficial. This safe prescription supplement can protect skin from sun damage and environmental toxins It can also lighten your complexion by reducing pigmentation, giving you a healthy, radiant skin from within.

Diamond Tomato Rx is formulated with two clinically proven ingredients: Phytofloral and Tranexamic acid. Both have been found in clinical studies to be safe and effective in treating brown spots and melasma on the skin.

  • Phytofloral – a natural antioxidant that comes from non-chemical processed tomatoes with colorless carotenoids. It helps lighten the skin by protecting it from environmental damage that causes age spots, sunburn, and pigmentation.
  • Tranexamic acid – made from an amino acid (protein) called lysine. This was discovered in clinical studies to reduce melasma if used in safe and lower concentrations.

Results may vary, but in clinical studies, they were seen within 8 to 12 weeks. Also, do take note that Diamond Tomato requires a prescription. You can contact our clinic and book a consultation with our Harvard-trained aesthetic doctor, Dr. Sylvia Ramirez.

Patience is key

With most treatments, it may take months before you see results, so it is important to follow your doctor’s recommendation. This is to make sure that you’ll get the most benefit from the treatment. This will also help you avoid unwanted side effects like redness and irritation.

You should also take note that you need to keep treating and taking care of your skin even after the pigmentation has faded. This is to prevent it from coming back. The use of sunscreen daily and avoiding overexposure to the sun can prevent those pesky marks from returning.
