Is Sagging Facial Skin Wearing You Down?

Loose or sagging skin on your face and neck can betray or give away your age. It can cause you to look older than you really are, especially with jowls and downturned mouth. Excess hanging skin, furthermore, can alter your facial expressions, giving you a sad or tired appearance even when you feel otherwise.

The natural aging process is often to blame for this saggy appearance. The decline of collagen and elastin as we age causes the skin to lose its elasticity and ability to snap back easily. We also lose facial fat as we grow older, which then causes the skin to sag, exacerbated with lower levels of collagen and elastin.

What’s making your face sag or droop?

Apart from the natural aging process, a number of other factors can contribute to the appearance of sagging skin. These include:

  • Spending time in the sun – Prolonged sun exposure can damage collagen and skin structure, which then accelerates skin aging. It can cause lines and wrinkles to develop sooner, as well as age spots on the face, hands, and other sun-exposed body parts.
  • Hormonal fluctuations – The decline in estrogen levels (happens during menopause) is associated with a host of skin issues such as dryness, wrinkles, and flushing. Less estrogen can also result in a loss of skin volume with weak or poorly defined facial contours.
  • Smoking This habit causes premature aging, as the chemicals in cigarettes degrade collagen. Smoking also promotes the appearance of lines and wrinkles around the lips due to the repetitive pursing of the mouth. Also, smoking deprives the skin of essential nutrients, which can then contribute to sagging skin and sallow complexion.
  • Weight loss When you gain weight, your facial skin stretches to accommodate extra stuffing. If your skin has been stretched for a long time, it is likely to become loose when you’ve finally lost weight. And as your skin loses elasticity with age, your skin won’t snap back the same it did when you were younger.

What can you do to combat sagging?

The effects of volume loss and sagging skin are visible and can make you self-conscious. At Cutis Medical Laser Clinics in Singapore, we have a number of aesthetic procedures that can address volume loss and weak facial contours.

Non-invasive facelift

Ultherapy is a US FDA-cleared non-invasive procedure for lifting and tightening the skin. It can be used on the face, neck, and chest to slow down the effects of aging. It delivers time-tested focused ultrasound energy deep into the skin’s layer, triggering collagen production. This results in a visible yet gentle lift over time. Ultherapy can also contour your neck and jawline.

Skin tightening using laser light

Titan skin tightening uses safe, infrared light to tighten skin on the face, arms, abdomen, and legs. It works by heating the dermis well below the skin’s surface to stimulate new collagen growth, resulting in tighter skin. It can also be combined with Laser Genesis in 2D Titan-Genesis Skin Rejuvenation to improve your skin’s texture and firmness for a smoother and younger-looking skin.

Injectable gels for volume loss

Dermal fillers can be used to address volume loss in the face and saggy skin. Hyaluronic-acid based fillers like Juvéderm are injected beneath the skin to give it a more youthful look. At Cutis Laser Clinics, we have the Juvéderm Volux for restoring and creating volume on the face, especially on the chin and jawline area.

We also have RADIESSE®, a filler composed of Calcium Hydroxylapatite or CaHA microspheres suspended in an aqueous gel carrier. It can add and restore volume loss, contour the jawline or lower face, as well as smooth moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. RADIESSE® also works as a bio-stimulator that stimulates the body to produce its own collagen. Find out what makes Radiesse different
