Fine lines and wrinkles are a normal part of the skin’s aging process. It is also a fact, however, that they make some people self-conscious, which is why many want to get rid of them or at least improve their appearance. And while you cannot completely prevent them, there are simple things you can do to prevent fine lines and wrinkles from getting deeper.
Continue reading as we take a closer look at the common causes of wrinkles, as well as the steps you can take to keep them from becoming more prominent.
What causes wrinkles?
Several factors contribute to the development of wrinkles. These include:
- Aging – The production of essential skin proteins, such as collagen and elastin slows down as we age, resulting in less elasticity and wrinkles. Skin cells, furthermore, are less able to divide and multiply, which can contribute to thinning skin and the formation of wrinkles.
- Muscle contractions – Facial expressions such as smiling, frowning, or squinting require muscle contractions. Over time, lines caused by these expressions can become more etched in the skin due to gravity, fat loss, and a decrease in bone mass.
- Sun damage – Prolonged and unprotected sun exposure is one of the worst things you can do to your skin. The ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can damage the collagen in the skin, breaking down the collagen fibers. This can contribute to wrinkles and sagging.
- Smoking – This damages skin cells and reduces collagen and elastin. It also limits the oxygen and nutrients that get delivered to skin cells and dehydrates the skin, contributing to wrinkling. The puckering of the mouth and squinting due to smoke also cause wrinkling around the eyes and mouth.
How to keep wrinkles from getting deeper or more prominent
While fine lines and wrinkles are inevitable, giving your skin the care and attention it deserves can help slow down their formation or keep them from becoming more noticeable.
Protect your skin from the sun
Although a little sun exposure is essential for vitamin D production, too much of it can break down collagen in the skin. Using broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily is a must, as well as practicing other sun protection measures, such as seeking shade, wearing sunglasses and UV protective clothing, as well as limiting UV exposure.
Always moisturize
The skin gets drier with aging, which is why it is important to moisturize daily after washing your face. Choose a formula with anti-aging and skin-nourishing ingredients, such as niacinamide, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid. These can help combat signs of aging or keep wrinkles from getting deeper.
Use anti-aging skincare
Apart from consistent sun protection and regular moisturizing, make sure to include anti-aging products in your routine. Retinoids are a popular and effective anti-aging ingredient known to speed up cellular turnover, promote collagen, and help reduce the look of wrinkles. Vitamin C is another one that helps reduce damage and minimize wrinkle appearance.
Consider sleeping on your back
Sleeping on your side or stomach can compress and distort facial skin, which can then accelerate the onset of wrinkles. You can prevent this by sleeping on your back, as well as using silk or satin pillowcases, which are gentler on your skin than cotton. They create less friction and let your hair and skin glide more easily.
Fill your diet with nutritious foods
A 2019 Dutch study involving 2,700 participants found that women who consume unhealthy snacks and lots of red meat tend to experience more facial wrinkling than those who include fruits in their diet. This only makes it important to add more fruits and vegetables in your diet, especially those with high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Don’t smoke
Smoking damages nearly every organ of the body, with visible effects on the skin. It damages booth collagen and elastin fiber, which can then make you more prone to developing wrinkles. The nicotine in the cigarette also constricts your blood vessels which can reduce the amount of oxygen and nutrients that get to your skin. Talk to your healthcare provider about cessation products that will be most beneficial to you.
Get enough sleep
Sleep is the time when your body repairs itself. Not getting enough of it can show up in your skin in the form of puffiness, dark circles, and a dull complexion. So, always make sure to get seven to nine hours of sleep at night. Make your bedroom ideal for sleeping by making it cool, dark, and quiet.
Consider aesthetic treatments
At Cutis Medical Laser Clinics, we have several non-surgical treatments that can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. These include:
- Botulinum toxin – uses a neurotoxin to temporarily weaken or paralyze the muscles responsible for wrinkles. It can be used on the forehead, between the brows, side of the eyes, and platysma muscles in the neck. Botulinum toxin in Singapore can give you a refreshed and energized appearance.
- Laser skin rejuvenation – uses innovative laser technology that stimulates the skin’s natural processes to improve sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, facial redness, and brown spots. It promotes a vibrant, healthy-looking complexion, restoring the health, clarity, and youthfulness of your skin.
- Dermal fillers – add or restore volume beneath the skin, which can then smooth out or improve the appearance of wrinkles. They can also be used to enhance facial contours to improve overall facial harmony. Dermal fillers in Singapore can also be combined with botulinum toxin for a more comprehensive anti-aging treatment.
- Bio-remodeling injectable – contains 100% pure hyaluronic acid (HA) and bio-stimulates essential skin proteins to restore hydration, improve skin laxity, and reduce visible signs of aging. Additionally, it can improve skin firmness and give you a more glowing or luminous complexion.
