Man Boobs: What Are They and How Can I Lose Them?

Man boobs or “moobs” are basically excess fat in the chest area. They can be frustrating and embarrassing for men.

Apart from making guys feel overly concerned about their clothing choices, there is also the issue of being uncomfortable when taking their shirt off in public, especially during summer vacations.

If you’re dealing with the same concerns and want to get rid of your “moobs”, it’s important to know a few basic things about them, including the two types of man boobs and their causes.

  • Gynecomastia. This refers to the benign growth of the glandular (muscle) tissue in the male breast. According to the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), it is usually caused by decreased testosterone activity, increased estrogen activity, or the use of certain medications.
  • Pseudogynecomastia. This refers to the male breast enlargement due to excess fat deposits. This is not a glandular or a tissue problem like gynecomastia, but mostly a condition that causes males to store extra fat in the chest area.

The majority of those who struggle with man boobs usually fall in the latter category (pseudogynecomastia). This means that their body is mostly just storing fat in the chest area.

How Can I Get Rid of Man Boobs (Pseudogynecomastia)?

Chest exercises may help tone up the body, but it will not necessarily reduce your man boobs. What you need to do is lower your overall body fat to lose or reduce the fat layer’s thickness. This is the same for other types of fat that don’t respond to diet and exercise, like those in your abdomen or belly.

In the case of man boobs and other stubborn fat, you can turn to a non-invasive aesthetic fat reduction treatment like CoolSculpting. This is specifically designed to treat fat bulges in the body, particularly those that are resistant to diet and exercise, without cuts, needles, or longer downtime.

What is CoolSculpting? How Does it Work?

CoolSculpting is a US FDA-approved aesthetic device that uses Cryolipolysis or fat freezing to destroy and kill fat cells. It features applicators of different sizes to treat different common problem areas in the belly, thighs, and arms, as well as smaller areas of fat found in the chin, bra or chest area, and knees.

It has a small applicator, called CoolMini, which is specifically designed to treat smaller pockets of fat, such as those unsightly pouches in the chest area or under the armpits. It can assist in contouring your body by reducing your man boobs, as well as other fat bulges that don’t respond to diet and exercise.

CoolSculpting reduces stubborn fat by exposing (only) the fat cells to cold temperatures, which then triggers apoptosis or natural cell death. Over time, the frozen fat cells die naturally and are cleared through the lymphatic system and processed as waste in the liver. This leaves the treated area slimmer and more sculpted.

How is the procedure performed?

It starts with marking the area of concern to determine where to place the handpiece. Then, a cooling gel pad will be placed on the skin for additional protection.

After this, the applicator will be placed on the marked area and vacuum pressure will draw the fat tissues between the cooling panels. This triggers the fat cells to jumpstart the process of natural removal in the body, which gradually reduces the thickness of the fat layer.

During the fat freezing, you may feel a pinching sensation, but after a few minutes, the treated area will feel numb which help minimize the discomfort. Minor redness or tingling sensation is common after the procedure, but you can return to your normal routines after the session.

Is CoolSculpting Safe?

Yes it is. CoolSculpting is a US FDA-cleared procedure that has a safety mechanism built in it to detect if the skin is getting too cold. If the skin is found to be too cold, the device shuts off automatically. Its proven effectiveness, along with its high safety profile, is the reason why over 5 million CoolSculpting treatments have been performed worldwide.

How Many Treatments Do I Need?

You will need about two (one on the left side and one on the right) or more treatments to achieve optimal results. Do take note that the length of the treatment will vary depending on the number of areas that need to be treated. On average, a single session can take about 45 to 60 minutes or more depending on the number of treatment cycles.

How Long Do I Have to Wait to See Results?

You may be able to see visible improvements in your chest area within 8 to 10 weeks. However, significant results can be seen within 60 to 90 days once the body has metabolized the dead fat cells. Also, the treated fat cells are gone for good and will never come back.
