Moisturizing Aging Skin: 4 Things You Need to Know

It is natural for the skin to get thinner and drier, as its physical makeup continues to change with aging. Collagen production declines and skin cell turn over slows down, contributing to sagging skin with lines and wrinkles. This only makes moisturizing even more necessary for mature skin.

The basic role of moisturizing is to trap water in the skin to keep it hydrated. Unfortunately, the products you’re using in your teenage years or 20s might not be enough to do what it needs to do in your later years. Moisturizing mature skin is completely different, as you want not just to hydrate your skin but also fight signs of aging.

Here are some of the things you need to know when moisturizing mature skin:

Use the right product

When choosing a moisturizer, look for a product with peptides, hyaluronic acid, Vitamin C, and other anti-aging ingredients. This will not just plump and hydrate your skin, but also help minimize the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Here are two good recommendations from Dr. Sylvia Skin Care:

  • Deep Hydrating Moisturizer – This rehydrates and strengthens the skin without the use of oil-based ingredient. It also contains seaweed extract and hyaluronic acid that work together to provide superior level of hydration. This product, furthermore, provides enhanced protection and water locking benefits.
  • Hyaluronic Moisturizer– This lightweight daily cream provides additional anti-aging benefits with clinically proven Argireline and DermaPeptide. This helps reduce wrinkle formation and increase skin’s smoothness. It also contains kojic acid, Vitamin C, niacinamide, and peptides to brighten the skin.

Moisturize at the right time (and way)

Apart from making sure that you moisturize day and night, you also need to apply the product to clean and slightly damp skin. This absorbs the product or moisture better and locks in hydration for a longer time. You should also do the same for hydrating products (like anti-aging serums) to let the ingredients penetrate on a deeper level.

When applying the product, make sure to do it evenly. Don’t forget the neck and upper chest area, as they need attention and protection too.  Be sure not to apply multiple layers to heal your dry skin, as it may only lead to clogged pores and waste the product.

Don’t forget your eyes

The fragile and delicate skin around the eyes also needs hydration and protection. This makes it important to invest in anti-aging eye cream formulated for mature skin or your skin type. You might also want to look for a product with antioxidants to protect the skin from free radicals.

We recommend Dr. Sylvia’s ELASTIfirm Eye Repair, which contains collagen and elastin-boosting ingredients to support the skin. This product helps tighten the upper eyelid, as well as reduce puffiness and appearance of wrinkles. It is also formulated with antioxidants to protect the thin and sensitive skin around the eyes.

Consider an anti-aging serum

The right serum can help target aging skin problems like fine lines, sagging skin, and age spots. It can also improve the skin’s protection against free radicals, as well as brighten and firm the skin.

Dr. Sylvia’s Fibroblast Growth Factor is one good option, as it targets age-related degradation and reactivate dermal and collagen activity. This dynamic serum also contains plant stem cells that can improve skin density, texture, and firmness. This has been found more effective than Vitamin C in clinical trials.
