NIR Skin Tightening: For Aging, Sagging, & Crepey-Looking Skin

Skin lifting or tightening doesn’t always have to involve cuts or needles. If you’re looking to improve loose or sagging skin on your face, neck, and other areas of the body, we have a new addition to our skin tightening treatments – the NIR (Near Infrared) Skin Tightening. It is less aggressive than laser resurfacing and chemical peels, which means fewer side effects and minimal downtime.

Continue reading as we explore this procedure and how it can help you maintain a youthful appearance.

The basics of NIR Skin Tightening

NIR or Near Infrared Skin Tightening is a non-invasive rejuvenation treatment that can tighten and contour the skin, as well as reduce cellulite. It can treat and improve aging, sagging, and crepey-looking skin by stimulating collagen growth, helping you achieve a more youthful appearance.

At Cutis Medical Laser Clinics, we use the Alma Laser with the NIR handpiece. This delivers pulsed infrared light to tighten loose skin on the face, neck, and other areas of the body. NIR allows you to see and enjoy gradual improvements in the skin’s firmness, texture, and evenness.

NIR Skin Tightening transforms your skin with almost no downtime. It can tighten, lift and contour the skin without cuts or needles, providing a “Cinderella effect” or making you feel as if you’re transformed as Cinderella.

So, how does it work?

NIR Skin Tightening uses a high-power light source in the near-infrared spectrum to effectively heat the deeper layers and water in the tissues. It causes the collagen fibers to tighten and contract, and the fibroblasts to repair skin cells and build new collagen. This helps reduce the appearance of loose skin and soften lines and wrinkles.

One unique thing about NIR is that it only heats the subdermal tissues or the skin’s deeper layers with collagen. This means that it doesn’t affect or disrupt the skin’s surface layer. It also uses the In-Motion technique, which involves moving the NIR handpiece around (in motion), rather than being held still. This provides an aggressive treatment with improved patient comfort.

Who is a good candidate for the procedure?

NIR Skin Tightening is safe for all skin types and can treat different areas of the face and the body, including the:

  • Chin and jowls
  • Cheeks
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead
  • Neck and décolleté
  • Hands
  • Upper arms
  • Abdomen
  • Thighs

Non-invasive skin tightening treatments like NIR are ideal for patients with mild to moderate skin laxity, as well as minimal stretch marks on the abdomen. It cannot replicate the effects of a surgical facelift, as it is a non-invasive procedure that doesn’t involve cuts or needles.

Make sure to follow all the pre- and post-treatment guidelines to get optimal results from your treatment.

Is the treatment painful? Are there side effects or downtime?

There may be some slight discomfort (as the NIR handpiece elevates the tissue temperature), but you shouldn’t feel any pain during the procedure. There is also some warming sensation, similar to being on a sunbed, which can be slightly uncomfortable at most. The good news is it has a cooling system that prevents the skin from feeling too warm.

With regards to side effects and downtime, you can expect redness and mild swelling after the procedure. These should subside within several hours. There is no downtime and you can immediately return to your normal routines after the treatment.

What results can I expect?

Soon after the procedure, you’ll notice improvement or firmer-looking skin. This, however, is partly due to the slight swelling of the skin after the procedure. Once this has gone down, you’ll see more changes as the treated area feels firmer and smoother.

Significant effects appear over two to three months, the period when the skin starts to build new collagen. Repeated or multiple treatments are also required, especially for those with deeper wrinkles or more prominent skin laxity.
