Oh No, It’s Greasy: How to Control Face Oiliness

Sebum (the natural oil produced by sebaceous glands) plays an important role in protecting and hydrating the skin. The sad part is too much of it can result in oiliness and clogged pores. It can also make your skin look rough or thick and contribute to pimples, blackheads, and other blemishes.

If you too are dealing with oily skin and want to keep excess sebum in check, here are a few things that can help:

Wash your face daily

To reduce the amount of oil on the skin, wash your face twice a day (morning and evening) and after exercising. Be sure to avoid face washes with strong fragrances or harsh formulas. Other tips for washing oily skin include:

  • Choose a mild facial cleanser ideal for oily skin, like Dr. Sylvia’s Deep Cleanser with AHA. This contains glycolic acid that can remove excess oil and exfoliate dead skin cells. This is also rich in antioxidants and natural moisturizers.
  • Avoid using loofahs or scrubbing your skin. Doing so creates friction that can irritate the skin and lead to more sebum production.
  • When dealing with oily skin and acne, consider face washes with salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or benzoyl peroxide. When using a new product for the first time, test it on a small area first to see how your skin will react.
  • If you can’t seem to find products that work for your skin type, ask a skin or aesthetic doctor for recommendations.

Include a toner in your routine

When using a toner, there can be a risk of over-stripping your skin of its natural oils. When this happens, you face will try to overcompensate by producing more sebum. This is why it is important to use a gentle toner that contains natural astringents instead of alcohol.

Dr. Sylvia’s Refreshing Toner with Herbal Astringents is one good recommendation. It is formulated with natural herbal astringents and witch-hazel extract. This helps constrict skin pores and reduce the amount of oil and its buildup.

Don’t be afraid of moisturizers

Some people with oily skin avoid using moisturizers with the belief that it can make their skin oilier. This is not necessarily true, as long as you use a product that is right for your skin type. This means choosing a light, oil-free formula and avoiding heavy creams or lotions.

We recommend the Deep Hydrating Moisturizer from Dr. Sylvia Skin Care. This re-hydrates and strengthens the skin without the use of oil-based ingredients. It is effective in restoring moisture without clogging your pores or causing breakouts.

Use blotting papers

Always carry a pack of blotting papers in your bag. These products are designed to absorb sebum from the skin without ruining your makeup. Do take note, however, that blotting papers will not treat the overproduction of oil. They can only pull excess oil off the skin to make it appear less greasy or shiny.

Use facial masks

Some facial masks can help reduce the oily and shiny appearance of the face. Clay masks are a good choice, as they contain minerals like bentonite that can absorb oils and remove impurities on the skin. This makes it helpful in treating oily skin and acne, as well as calm existing breakouts.

Another good option is oatmeal mask. This soothing facial mask has absorbent qualities that can help reduce excess oil production. Oats are also extremely moisturizing, and contain cleansing properties and anti-inflammatory compounds that can calm irritated skin.

Don’t forget sun protection

Sunscreen is necessary regardless of your skin type. This helps prevent sun damage that could contribute to age spots, wrinkles, and other skin problems. Be sure to look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with zinc oxide, as this can help control sebum production and improve the appearance of large pores.

Things to keep in mind

If you have oily skin and are struggling with mild/severe acne, it is advisable to see a dermatologist or aesthetic doctor. This is to find the best ways to control oil and protect your skin. A consultation with an expert will also help you create a routine that works for your skin type and other skin dilemmas.
