Pigmentation Concerns: Is Pico Laser Right for You?

Many topical treatments claim to fade or banish hyperpigmentation, but not all deliver on their promises. While some do lighten existing dark spots, the process takes two months or more to see subtle improvements. This is why many are considering aesthetic treatments, which are said to offer faster and more visible results.

Pico Laser is one of the pigmentation treatments in Singapore that has been gaining popularity. It uses short bursts of laser energy that can penetrate deeper, with less heat delivered to the skin and reduced risk of side effects. It can treat different types of discoloration, as well as tattoos, scarring, and other skin imperfections.

What is Pico Laser?

Pico Laser is a non-surgical treatment that uses laser energy to break down visible pigments into smaller particles. At Cutis, we use an Nd:YAG picosecond laser system for treating tattoos and pigmented lesions. This emits light pulses of four different wavelengths to target various skin/pigmentation concerns.

Pico Laser also has a fractional system called the HEXA MLA (Micro Lens Array) handpiece. It can replace aggressive scar treatments such as subcision, and noticeably lift depressed scars without causing pain or discomfort. It also allows gentle and effective treatments of enlarged pores, fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin texture.

How does it work?

Pico Laser delivers laser energy into the skin, which the pigment absorbs. It generates heat that shatters the pigmentation into tiny fragments or microscopic particles. Then, the body’s immune system targets and attacks the broken-down pigments, removing them naturally. The laser also helps with collagen production for overall skin rejuvenation.

It uses faster laser pulses with short duration, offering more laser pulses every second. Designed to penetrate deeper, it can target deeper layers of pigmentation and other skin concerns without excessive heat damage. This means less photothermal effects on the skin and fewer treatments with almost no side effects.

Who can benefit from Pico Laser treatment?

Apart from helping fade pigmentation and removing tattoos, Pico Laser Singapore treatments also stimulate collagen production. This is essential for overall skin rejuvenation, which can include smoothing skin texture and getting rid of acne scars. At Cutis, we use the Pico Laser system for the following skin concerns:

  • Freckles, melasma, café au lait
  • Epidermal lesions
  • Age spots (senile lentigos), solar lentigo (sun spots)
  • Acne scars (box, ice pick, rolling, hypertrophic)
  • Seborrheic keratosis
  • Skin rejuvenation

Does pigmentation turn darker after Pico Laser?

It is common for the discolored areas to appear darker after the treatment. And this is one of the reasons many people think Pico Laser is ineffective or does not work. What happens is that as the body’s immune system absorbs the broken-down pigmentation, it sends white blood cells into the area to remove the pigment. This can take time and may cause the spots to appear darker.

This darkening can last for one to three weeks, but is a sign that your treatment is working. After this period, the discolored spots will start to lighten, with your skin becoming more glowing as time goes by. Just make sure to follow aftercare instructions or avoid direct sunlight, as it can worsen the darkening of pigmentation.

Is it suitable for everyone?

Pico Laser has a low risk of pigmentation, making it safe for all skin types and colors, including darker skin tones. It is not, however, ideal for those with active skin infections, photosensitive skin disorders, a history of skin cancer, or are taking medications that might interact with lasers.

A thorough consultation with an aesthetic doctor can determine if a Pico Laser Singapore treatment is right for you. This is to understand your specific skin condition and identify the cause of the problem. They can also recommend other treatments or skincare that can work well with the issues you’re dealing with.

Are the results permanent?

With proper skincare maintenance, the results can last for months or years. It can effectively treat various skin imperfections, including pigmentation, acne scarring, enlarged pores, and uneven skin texture.

After completing or receiving the recommended number of sessions, the results can be long-lasting. Continuous sun exposure, however, can cause pigmentation issues to return following successful laser treatments. Other factors that may cause discoloration to return include hormonal changes, aggressive treatments, and picking at treated areas.
