Prevention is Better Than Cure: 6 Ways to Prevent Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is one of the most difficult skin issues to treat. While topical treatments do work, they require consistent use for months to see improvements. There are also cases where dark spots come back even after successful treatment. This is why it is better to prevent them from forming instead of trying different products to treat the pigmentation.

So, how can you prevent hyperpigmentation from occurring in the first place? Is there a specific product that can prevent, treat, or keep it from coming back? Continue reading as we share preventative care on hyperpigmentation and what you can do to maintain and promote healthy, radiant skin.

1. Prioritize sun protection

The most effective way to prevent hyperpigmentation is to protect your skin from excessive and prolonged sun exposure. One of the best ways to do it is by wearing sunscreen every day. This can keep new spots from forming in the first place, as well as stop existing pigmentation from getting worse.

The SPF in your foundation or any other cosmetic product is not going to cut it. It is still recommended to go with a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. You can also benefit from wearing sunglasses, UV-protective clothing, or a wide-brimmed hat, especially at times of peak UV radiation, like between 12 noon and 2 pm.

2. Don’t touch or limit touching your face

Picking at your blemishes or touching your face constantly not only prolongs the healing process but also increases the risk of hyperpigmentation and scarring. It can lead to irritation and inflammation, which may prompt the skin to produce more melanin or pigment, resulting in dark spots or discolored patches.

When you need to touch your face, like when applying makeup or skincare, make sure to wash your hands first. You also need to be mindful of your hand movements throughout the day and treat existing acne or blemishes to reduce inflammation and the risk of hyperpigmentation.

3.Be gentle with exfoliation

Proper and gentle exfoliation helps promote smoother and more vibrant skin. It can remove dead skin cells and promote skin cell turnover, which can then improve the overall appearance of your skin. Just make sure to choose the right exfoliation method based on your skin type and needs. Check out our previous blog for the things you need to know about exfoliating your face

Do take note while exfoliating can be good for your skin, it can sometimes disrupt your skin barrier. If not done properly, it can irritate your skin and make existing hyperpigmentation worse. It is recommended to be gentle and take extra care when exfoliating and always make sure to moisturize afterward and don’t forget sun protection.

4. Use the right skincare

To treat and prevent hyperpigmentation, use skin care products with ingredients that are formulated to even skin tone. Niacinamide, for instance, is effective in helping lighten existing dark spots and preventing new ones from forming. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can improve overall skin tone and texture.

Another product to incorporate into your routine is Vitamin C serum. This antioxidant-rich formula can brighten the skin, neutralize free radicals, and provide anti-aging benefits. Dr. Sylvia’s 20% Vitamin C with Ferulic Acid is a potent anti-oxidizing formula that can reduce oxidative damage, even skin tone, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

5. Mind your lifestyle

While skincare helps, you also need to mind your habits and lifestyle. Being in constant stress, for instance, can trigger the overproduction of melanin, resulting in hyperpigmentation. It can also cause inflammation in the skin and make you more susceptible to sun damage.

This only makes it important to practice self-care and keep stress in check. You can improve your skin’s overall health and even prevent hyperpigmentation naturally by:

  • Eating a diet rich in different vitamins and minerals
  • Staying hydrated
  • Moisturizing regularly
  • Getting at least 7 hours of sleep every night

You can also consider professional treatments to support your efforts in managing or treating hyperpigmentation in Singapore. These are specifically designed to target the skin’s deeper layers to address the root cause of pigmentation issues.

6. Lighten dark spots and prevent their reappearance

At Cutis Medical Laser Clinics in Singapore, we have Dermamelan, a medical depigmenting treatment that can remove stubborn pigmentation and prevent its recurrence. It features a double corrective action that can lighten dark spots and regulate melanin overproduction to prevent their reformation.

Dermamelan paralyzes melanin production without damaging melanocytes or the pigment-producing cells. It targets pigment buildup in the skin and involves two phases:

  • In-clinic phase – Involves the application of two masks with an intensive depigmentation action. You will have to go home with the mask on your face.
  • At-home phase – Involves removing the masks after four hours and using the complimentary products provided for four months.

It can treat different types of pigmentation, including:

  • Melasma
  • Sunspots or solar lentigines
  • Freckles
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Blotchy skin

It is normal for the skin to appear red or feel irritated temporarily following treatment. There may also be swelling in the first week and mild flaking that can last for two weeks. New skin emerges after this process with the final results seen six to nine months of treatment.

Make sure to always protect your skin from the sun and follow all the after-care guidelines. This is essential to regulate or keep the overproduction of melanin under control.
