Reshaping Your Jawline with Botox: 8 Things You Need to Know

While Botulinum toxin or Botox is commonly known for treating fine lines and wrinkles, it can now be used as a jaw reduction treatment. It can improve the appearance of strong jawline by reducing its width or making it look rounder. It offers subtle and natural results without the complications associated with surgical procedures.

At Cutis Laser Clinics, we offer Botox for improving wrinkles and jaw contouring. If you’re considering the latter for a more feminine face shape, you may be glad to know that it is highly effective and has no downtime. Continue reading to learn the other things you need to know when reshaping your jawline with Botox

1. The Basics

More commonly known as the brand Botox, Botulinum Toxin is a US FDA-cleared injectable used for treating dynamic wrinkles or those that are formed due to repetitive facial expressions. These include forehead lines, frown lines between the brows, crow’s feet, and smoker’s lines.

This works by temporarily blocking the signal from nerves to muscles, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. For wrinkle reduction, it will take at least two weeks to see the full effects. You can expect the results to last between three and six months, but may be longer with repeated injections.

2. Botox for jaw reduction

For jaw slimming and contouring, Botox is injected in the masseter muscles (in the back of the jaw). These are the same muscles used for chewing and clenching the teeth. It involves the use of fine needles that blocks the activity in the said area and relaxes the muscles. The result is a slimmer or a more defined jawline.

Botox can also help patients with bruxism (teeth grinding). As it relaxes and softens the muscles along the angles of the jaw, it reduces any involuntary grinding of teeth or clenching of the jaw.

3. The procedure

The treatment can be completed in as little as 10 minutes. The injection may feel like tiny bite ants or pin pricks, but most patients find it tolerable. If you’re worried about pain and discomfort, it is good to know that a numbing cream will be used to make it more comfortable.

4. Results and side effects

Botox injections provide a noticeable softening and slimming effect that helps in giving patients their desired facial profile. Visible slimming and enhancement of the area can be seen within two weeks. You will see full results at least 4 to 6 weeks after the treatment.

The procedure has no downtime, so you can return to your daily activities. Common side effects include bruising or redness of the treatment area. This is temporary and usually subsides on their own in a day or two.

5. Botox units needed

The number of dosage or Botox units also varies from patient to patient, depending on the strength of muscles. In general, a minimum of 60 units will be needed for first timers to see noticeable effect. This dosage is likely to decrease the more often you receive Botox injections.

A consultation with an experienced aesthetic doctor will let you know what to expect and discuss your goals.

6. The cost of Botox

Here at Cutis Laser Clinics, we charged Botox at $18 per unit. We are very transparent with our charges and will only charge accordingly. We base the number of units required on the strength of your muscles.

Do take note that some clinics charge per unit while others charge per area. This is why you have to check the pricing and only proceed with the treatment if you are comfortable with the cost.

7. Combining Botox with dermal fillers

You may also combine Botox with dermal fillers to see optimal results. At Cutis Laser Clinics, we use fillers made with hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally present in the body. This makes the procedure safe and effective with low risk of allergy.

You can turn to dermal fillers to reshape the chin area and have V-shape facial contour. Fillers can lift up the lower face to give you a sharper, softer and attractive looking chin. They can also widen the midface to improve the facial harmony of those with square-shaped faces.

8. Work with a skilled injector

When getting fillers or Botox, work only with an experienced injector. Having a skilled aesthetic doctor is important, as wrong technique or injections in the wrong spot could result in negative side effects.

Dr. Sylvia Ramirez, the Medical Director of Cutis Medical Laser Clinics, is a certified skin specialist and Harvard-trained doctor. She will determine if Botox treatments are right for you, as well as provide information about your options. She will also create a treatment plan based on your goals and expectations.
