Take Better Care of Your Intimate Health!

A number of products, including wipes, scented pantyliners, douches, and sprays are available for taking care of your vagina. But do you actually need them? Can they take better care of the area and improve your intimate health?

Vaginal secretions

Apart from your period or menstruation, you vagina produces a white discharge or secretion. While this may sound gross, this is actually normal and not bad news. The vagina does this as a way of cleansing itself. The amount and character of the discharge may also vary throughout your menstrual cycle.

When the secretions become stretchy or thicker, it is normal to feel a slight wetness down there. This shouldn’t  have a strong odor and color, and lead to soreness or itching around the area. However, if notice extreme changes to the discharge, it is best to see your health care provider.

Tips on taking care of your vagina

  1. Wear cotton undies

When it comes to selecting underwear, only choose 100% cotton. As this fabric is breathable, it can keep the area down there dry and cool. Cotton can also wick away moisture, minimizing your risk of having bacterial growth and infections.

Be sure to avoid silk, nylon, satin, acetate, and other synthetic fibers, as they reduce airflow and retain moisture. To avoid irritation and bacterial growth, stick with cotton and only wear fancy fabrics on special occasions.

  1. Don’t douche or stop douching

Your vaginal cleanse itself through vaginal discharge, which carries out bacteria and dead cells out of the body. This is why you don’t need to use harsh cleansers or a douche, which can disrupt the natural pH balance and normal vaginal bacteria.

If you’re using a douche to “clean” your intimate, do take note that doing so means introducing chemicals in the region that can wash away good bacteria and irritate the vagina. Stick with mild/unscented soap and warm water.

  1. Don’t abuse or overuse antibiotics

Antibiotics destroy bad bacteria in the body, but they can also kill the good ones in the process. It can kill off the beneficial bacteria in the vagina, triggering the growth of yeast and other infections. Yeast infections can lead to irritation and itching in the vagina and vulva.

This is why when using antibiotics, it is best to only do so when prescribed by your health care provider. It pays to make sure that you truly needed the medication before taking it.

  1. Practice safe sex

During intercourse, some bacteria and viruses can get into the vagina and infect the area. This only makes it important to practice safe sex or use a condom every time you have intercourse.

Proper and consistent use of condom offers protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). This is especially true for diseases transmitted by genital fluids such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis.

  1. Do Kegel exercises

Apart from toning both the vaginal and pelvic floor muscles, Kegel exercises can improve urinary stress incontinence. These are also beneficial in making your intimate area feel firmer.

It is a good idea to make Kegel exercises part of your daily routine. If you’re having difficulties in doing the exercises, don’t hesitate to ask your health care provider. S/he can offer suggestions or feedback in identifying and exercising  the right muscles.

This triggers the body’s natural regenerative process to produce new and stronger collagen. The restoration of collagen process takes over time, normally within 60 to 90 days after the procedure.
