Take it Easy: 5 Ways to Be Gentle on Your Skin

Proper skincare is more than about regular cleansing and moisturizing. While these things help, it is also important to treat your skin with respect. This means being gentle, regardless of your skin type or applying less pressure skin. Doing so can avoid irritation and redness, as well as help you get clearer and healthier skin. 

Here are a few ways to be gentle on your skin:

1. Skip makeup or have barefaced days

Regular or daily use of cosmetic products can sometimes irritate your skin. This is especially true if you wear several layers of makeup and apply continuous pressure to your skin using fingertips or makeup applicators. Makeup, moreover, can clog pores and trigger breakouts when not removed properly. 

Aim to have makeup free days to allow your skin to decongest from any pore-clogging ingredients you apply on your face. This can help your skin function properly and enable better penetration of creams, serums, and other skin care products.

2. Avoid vigorous scrubbing or rubbing

This means being gentle or careful with the way you handle your skin. It is advisable to avoid loofahs or face scrubs when cleaning or exfoliating your face, this can sometimes do more harm than good. Rigorous exfoliation can also lead to redness and inflammation, triggering breakouts due to compromised skin barrier.

It is best to stick with gentle and light pressure, not only when cleansing or exfoliating, but also when applying certain products. This is particularly true for delicate areas like the skin around the eyes.

3. Use silk or satin pillowcases

While cotton is a common fabric used in pillowcases, it is not the best choice for your skin. It can trap dirt, sweat, hair/skincare products, and dead skin cells. It also sucks the moisture out of your hair and pulls and tugs on the skin. If your face is pressed down against a cotton pillowcase, unwanted creases or wrinkles may also form.

Swap cotton pillowcases for silk ones to allow your skin to glide smoothly against the fabric. Silk and satin pillowcases are gentler on skin, as they help your hair and skin retain moisture. This also means no friction or less rubbing, which translates to less chances of developing wrinkles. 

4. Avoid irritants and drying ingredients

Products that contain alcohol, chemicals, and added fragrances can potentially irritate your skin and make it feel dry and tight. It can also cause it to produce too much sebum. Drying ingredients can cause the skin to release more oil to compensate for the dryness. This can then trigger breakouts.

This only makes it important to use gentle products and avoid those that are heavily scented or contain strong essences. You can also benefit from consulting a skin or aesthetic doctor for product recommendations.

5. Don’t over-wash or over-exfoliate

The recommended amount for washing your face is twice daily, morning and night. You also need to do so after sweating heavily. Avoid washing your face several times a day, as it can only irritate your skin and speed up aging. If your face is oily, it is best to use blotting papers to remove the oil.

The same can also be said about exfoliating. While doing so help improve skin tone, overdoing it can result in dryness and irritation. It is advisable to exfoliate gently and don’t do it more than twice a week.
