What Causes Your Skin to Age Quickly?

While it is true that genetics play a part in the way skin age, it is not only the thing responsible. A number of factors are also at play, including lifestyle, overall health, and environmental factors. This only makes it important to assess or look into your daily habits, as some of them can cause you to skin age faster.

  1. Sun exposure – Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun cause major damage on the skin. They can alter its DNA makeup, which can result in aesthetic changes, as well as the start of skin cancer. Repeated sun damage can lead to age spots, saggy skin, lines and wrinkles, rough skin, and blotchy complexion.
  2. Smoking – Cigarettes contain chemicals that can impair blood flow and reduce the amount of nutrients and oxygen that reach your skin. The habit also damages collagen and elastin, resulting in premature skin wrinkling. Smoking accelerates the aging process and increases your risks of serious diseases like lung cancer.
  3. Insufficient or poor quality sleep – Without enough rest, your skin cells cannot regenerate and your skin won’t be able to repair itself from damage and inflammation. Sleep deprivation may also promote skin inflammation, which can lead to breakouts, dullness, and compromised skin quality.
  4. Unhealthy diet – A diet consisting of fatty, sugary, and processed foods can negatively affect your skin. Excessive sugar, for instance, can cause inflammation in the body, which can damage the skin and contribute to oiliness. Poor diet also means that you won’t get the nutrients you need, which may show up on your skin.
  5. Sedentary lifestyle – Sitting or lying down most of the time means less exposure to fresh air and natural light. This can lead to increased stress levels, which can contribute to sebum production and more breakouts. A sedentary lifestyle may also result in more fat, which can mess your hormones and affect your skin health.
  6. Stress – Excessive stress causes the body to release more cortisol (stress hormones), resulting in increased sebum production. This can then clog your pores, trigger breakouts, and worsen existing skin conditions. Too much cortisol can also break down collagen and elastin, and lead to dark circles, puffy eyes, and lines and wrinkles.
  7. Repetitive facial expressions – Facial movements/expressions such as frowning, squinting, and raising your eyebrows can contribute to fine lines and wrinkles. These lines can become deeper and more prominent over time, especially with the loss of skin elasticity due to the natural aging process.
  8. Poor skin care routine – Scrubbing your skin hard, washing your face excessively, and not removing makeup before bed are some of the things that can irritate the skin and accelerate aging. The same is also true for using skin care products with harsh or irritating ingredients.

Aesthetics treatments for looking younger

While we cannot stop the aging process, we can take some preventative actions on some controllable factors. Apart from tweaking your habits and avoiding the things mentioned above, you can also benefit from undergoing nonsurgical aesthetic treatments. Here are some procedures worth considering:

  • Ultherapy – This non-invasive facelift procedure can lift and tighten skin on the face, chin area, and lower neck. It uses ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen production and improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
  • Pearl Resurfacing – This FDA-cleared laser procedure can reduce the appearance of acne marks, wrinkles, and pigmentation. It treats the top layer of skin using pulses of light, which then helps generate collagen production.
  • Limelight facial – This innovative laser device uses US FDA-cleared “intense pulsed light” technology to address a range of skin concerns. It can treat freckles and uneven complexion on your face, neck and décolleté.
  • Laser Genesis – This uses non-invasive laser technology to improve the signs of aging. These include sun damage, acne scars, and enlarged pores. Laser Genesis can also brighten the skin and improve uneven complexion.
  • Botox – This FDA-cleared anti-wrinkle injectable can treat frown lines and forehead lines, as well as wrinkles in the corner of the eyes and smoker’s lines. It temporarily blocks the signal from a nerve to a muscle to relax the wrinkles.
