What is Electroporation and What Can it Do for Your Skin?

Electroporation is said to enable fast and deep penetration of active ingredients, which is beneficial for skin revitalization. We at Cutis are now using this technology through EPN Plus, which combines microneedling with electroporation. This is designed to rejuvenate the skin and address a variety of skin concerns.

Continue reading as our aesthetic clinic in Singapore explores more about electroporation, its benefits, and what it can do for your skin. We are also providing a brief rundown of EPN Plus Microneedling with Electroporation and how it can give you a radiant and youthful complexion.

What is electroporation?

Electroporation is a technology that uses electrical pulses that increase the permeability of the cell membrane. It is said to create aqueous channels that facilitate the introduction of active ingredients. The technique can be used in conjunction with other treatments to improve skin rejuvenation.

Before making its way into dermatology, electroporation was first used by doctors to administer anti-cancer medication. It was developed by scientists at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Electroporation therapy (EPT) releases electrical pulses through an electrode (placed in a tumor) to improve the ability of the anti-cancer medication to enter tumor cells.

How does electroporation work?

As previously mentioned, electroporation uses an electrical field or releases electro-stimulating pulses into the skin. This then enhances the permeability of the skin membranes, which then enables an efficient introduction of topical products into the skin cells. The main upside is it can help achieve good results without puncturing the skin.

The use of electroporation temporarily opens the protein channel in the lipid layer of the skin. The naked eye cannot see the opening and this closes immediately when the electroporation is not used anymore. The technique itself does not affect the skin; the active ingredients used in the treatment deliver the desired effects.

Electroporation can be used alone or alongside microneedling. This enhances the results of the latter treatment and increases the products that can be delivered to the skin for a fresher and rejuvenated complexion.

What are the benefits of electroporation?

The main benefit of electroporation is the deeper penetration of active ingredients into the skin. It can be used to improve a variety of skin concerns, including:

  • Expression lines
  • Acne scarring
  • Skin resurfacing
  • Skin firming
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Anti-aging
  • Cellulite and stretch marks

EPN Plus Microneedling with Electroporation at Cutis

The EPN (Electroporation Needle) Plus enhances the effectiveness of microneedling by combining it with electroporation. The procedure starts with the device creating ultra-fine channels that stimulate collagen production. Electroporation then delivers electro-stimulating pulses to create temporary tiny holes in the cells. This allows skincare ingredients to penetrate through them.

The combination of microneedling and electroporation allows effective treatments of various skin concerns while delivering a safe and minimally invasive procedure. The stimulation of the body’s healing process, along with increased absorption of active ingredients, can give you visible and significant skin rejuvenation results.

Benefits of EPN Plus treatment:

  • Improves skin texture and tone – reduces the appearance of enlarged pores for smoother skin and a more even-toned appearance.
  • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles – new collagen production helps smooth out fine lines and wrinkles for a more youthful appearance.
  • Treats acne scars and hyperpigmentation – reduces the look of acne scars, dark spots, and other pigmentation issues.
  • Enhances hydration – the combination of skin needling and electroporation effectively delivers hydrating serums deep into the skin, resulting in a plump and radiant complexion.
  • Promotes scalp healthEPN Plus can also be used on the scalp to support hair growth and improve overall scalp health.

Serums that can be paired with EPN

At Cutis, we also have potent serums that complement the EPN Plus treatment and help you achieve a flawless and bright complexion.

  • All in Derm –  a carefully formulated bio-revitalization solution that can fight the signs of aging. It provides antioxidant protection, improves pigmentation, enhances skin hydration, strengthens the skin barrier, and stimulates collagen and elastin production.
