The product we recommend

Sunscreens are a must regardless of the weather. They come in non-tinted and tinted formulations, with the latter gaining more popularity as they are said to give the skin a subtle glow. As tinted sunscreens have an added tint or color base, they can both provide UV protection and help even out your skin tone or hide minor imperfections.

Does the added benefit mean that tinted formulas are better than non-tinted ones? Are they the best sunscreens for face? Is it time to replace your current SPF with a tinted one? Continue reading as we explore what tinted sunscreen is and what makes it different from a typical formula.

What is tinted sunscreen?

Tinted sunscreens are SPF formulations that contain mineral filters such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, as well as additional pigments. These colored pigments create shades that match different skin tones, adding another layer of protection while also giving the skin an attractive glow.

With skin tone shades or visible skin-tone color, tinted sunscreens can reflect away visible light. The additional color of these formulas is created by mixing yellow, red, and black iron oxide with pigmentary titanium dioxide. This provides a tint that can be matched to any skin tone.

What are the benefits of tinted sunscreen?

So, which sunscreen is best for face? Tinted sunscreens may have an advantage over regular SPF as they can give you the appearance of an even skin tone or flawless skin while protecting you from harmful UV rays. Benefits include:

  • Sun protection – broad spectrum formulas provide protection against UVA and UVB rays, which can help prevent sunburn, sun damage, and premature aging. They can also lower your risk of developing skin cancers.
  • Conceals minor flaws – the color from the tint can hide some of your minor imperfections, including dark spots, redness, and other blemishes. It could also serve as a light, natural-looking makeup or if you’re looking to avoid heavy makeup on a regular basis.
  • Can reflect away visible light – visible light can come from the sun, as well as artificial sources such as screens, light bulbs, and devices. Visible light is known to worsen certain conditions such as melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
  • Saves time or simplifies your makeup routine – tinted sunscreens combine the benefits of an SPF and foundation/concealer. They provide light coverage and UV protection, which can then cut the time needed to get ready in the morning.

Is tinted sunscreen less effective than regular sunscreen?

No. It is as effective as regular SPF. It can actually be more effective than typical white or clear sunscreen due to having iron oxides, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These are mineral particles that have been shown to block UV light and blue light, which is emitted from electronic devices such as smartphones and laptops.

Blue light is said to contribute to oxidative stress, which can damage essential skin proteins and cause the skin to develop dark spots and form wrinkles early. Read our previous blog about blue light from your phone and how it can affect your skin.

What to look for in a sunscreen

So, what sunscreen is best for face? Many reputable brands are good, but if you’re considering tinted sunscreen, it is advisable to choose a formula with added ingredients that support skin health. Here are three basic tips when choosing which sunscreen is the best

  • Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher – Don’t forget to pair it with other sun protection measures such as wearing sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and protective clothing.
  • Consider your skin type – If you, for instance, have oily or acne-prone skin, look for a lightweight formula or a product with niacinamide which helps with redness and regulates oil production.
  • Choose a fragrance-free formula – Some products with added fragrance can cause redness and irritation. This is especially true if you have sensitive or blemish-prone skin.

Take note: Tinted sunscreens are different from tinted moisturizers with SPF, which offer less sun protection. So, whenever buying sunscreens, read the label carefully and always choose a tinted sunscreen over a tinted moisturizer.
