Why Less is More in Skin Care

Our desire for clear and glowing skin is one of the reasons why there is a range of skin care products claiming to solve our skin issues. While many of them bring positive results, the sad part is also lots of them don’t quite deliver on their promises.

We want the best skin care products we could possibly have, with the belief that they can make our skin better. But does it really benefit the skin? Is using multiple products or extremely generous applications better?

Keeping it simple

A simplified skin care routine is actually better for skin, as using seven to 10 products at night has a higher potential to cause irritation. Do take note that using several products all at once also means putting/applying different chemicals and active ingredients on your skin.

When you overload on products, it is likely that you’ll disrupt the natural moisture balance of your skin. Moreover, certain ingredients may counteract each other and cause irritation and redness. There is also a possibility of having more breakouts, especially if you use different acne-fighting products all at once.

It is also best to use the product as directed. If the instructions, for instance, say use a tiny amount, don’t apply generously. Applying more will not necessarily make the product work faster. It may actually end up being counterproductive, as it can result in dryness and irritation.

Less also applies to cleansing

Apart from simplifying your skin care routine, you should also mind your face washing habits. Over washing or cleansing is something you should avoid, as it could do more harm than good. This is true even if you have oily or acne-prone skin. Doing so can only irritate your skin and result in more breakouts.

If you got oily or problematic skin, a face wash with glycolic acid or salicylic acid can be benefits. The same is also true for a face cleanser that can remove excess oil and moisturize the skin. You can also benefit from using blotting papers to pull off excess oil and make your skin appear less shiny throughout the day.

Less pressure and friction on skin

Other than using the right amount of product, you should also be careful with the way you handle your skin. This means applying the product gently, especially in delicate areas, like the skin around the eyes. Also, you shouldn’t rub your skin excessively, as too much pressure can damage the skin and cause discoloration.

Another important part of applying less friction to your skin is wearing less makeup. Avoid wearing too many layers of cosmetics, as layering also means applying continuous pressure to skin through brushes, sponges, or fingertips. You can still wear makeup, but go easy on the application. The same also applies for the removal.

Being patient

With the “less is more” approach in skincare, it is important to be patient. It can sometimes take about two month or more for the product to take effect and improve your skin. If your regimen does not meet your expectations instantly, it does not mean that it won’t. Sometimes, things will get worse before they get better.

Being patient also means being consistent with your routine. Don’t give up too quickly; allow your skin to adjust and become accustomed with the products. You can, however, consider switching products, if the ones you’re using have been ineffective for several months. Consulting a skin/aesthetic doctor is advisable.
