In a recent study , laxity of the vaginal introitus (opening) was expressed as a concern by 48% of respondents and vaginal changes were equated with loss of sexuality, burdensome sexual performance, and a yearning for intimacy and sexual confidence experienced after having children.
Approximately 50% or more of women in the study felt that improving the tightness of their vaginal introitus would have a positive effect on the relationship with their partner, both their sexual confidence and overall confidence, the orgasmic experience of both them and their partner, and sexual satisfaction.
Right now, there are few options for the effective treatment of vaginal laxity. While Kegel exercises are frequently used by women, they actually target the muscles of the pelvic floor and, therefore, do not address vaginal laxity. There are also surgical options currently available to women which include significant recovery time and post-procedure pain.
While there are few treatment options available, vaginal laxity is extremely common in particular for woman who had vaginal delivery. Just like skin, vaginal tissue is made up of collagen fibers. During vaginal childbirth these tissues can overstretch, damaging the collagen and creating a feeling of looseness (laxity), especially around the vaginal opening.
One study sponsored by Viveve found that 88% percent of physicians reported vaginal laxity was discussed by their patients who reported a physical change related to delivery. This was higher than weight gain, incontinence, stretch marks and other common side effects of childbirth. Women who experience this loss of tightness may also notice a decreased feeling of sensation and sexual satisfaction during intercourse. These changes can affect a woman’s overall sexual health and are a quality of life issue for millions of women every year.
“Our focus is to help women to feel sexy not only from the outside but also from the inside out”, says Dr. Sylvia, Medical and Scientific Director of Cutis Medical Laser Clinics.
“This is why we wanted to make the globally patented Viveve System, which provides an effective and painless treatment for vaginal laxity available to our patients”. “It also dovetails with our Age Management Program Optimagenics which which has shown to increase physical and sexual vitality”.
The Viveve Treatment offers a painless medical procedure for treating vaginal laxity which works by cooling and gently heating vaginal tissue. It requires no anaesthesia and can be completed in about 30 minutes.
At the beginning of the procedure, a treatment tip, about the size of your thumb, is inserted just inside the vaginal opening. The tip is circumferentially moved around the opening, delivering pulses of radiofrequency energy to the collagen fibers that make up the underlying tissues, while also cooling the vaginal surface. Vaginal tissue reacts to the energy by stimulating the formation of new collagen fibers restoring the tissue.
This collagen restoration process takes place over time, usually between 30-90 days after the treatment. The changes occur on the cellular level, so there are no outward signs of change to the vaginal tissue. There is no downtime and normal activities can be resumed following the procedure.
In two Viveve clinical studies – one in the US and the other in Japan – women who reported an increase in vaginal laxity following childbirth underwent the Viveve Treatment with the following results: 1) Improved and sustained vaginal tightness was shown by 88% of the women at 12 months after treatment 2) Women who were treated experienced a 68% mean increase in their vaginal laxity scores at 12 months 3) Improvement in sexual satisfaction was maintained through 12 months after treatment. No serious adverse events were reported in either study.
