Laser Hair Reduction

Laser Hair Reduction SingaporeTired of shaving, waxing, or removing unwanted hair with short-lived results? Laser hair reduction can help. This and related light-based methods use technologies that are designed to inhibit future hair growth. They selectively target specific areas of hair, leaving the surrounding skin unharmed.

How It Works

Laser hair reduction in Singapore removes unwanted hair by targeting the pigment or melanin in the follicles. It involves the use of a handheld device that delivers concentrated pulses of laser light pulses into the follicles. The pigment absorbs the light and converts it into heat, which in turn damages the follicles and stunts hair growth.

At Cutis, we use an Nd:YAG laser, which has a 1064 nm wavelength. A1064 nm wavelength is ideal for darker or tanned complexions, as it bypasses the melanin in the skin and solely targets the pigment of the follicle. It uses a handheld device that delivers concentrated pulses of laser light that damage the follicles and halt future hair growth.

The said wavelength also penetrates enough to damage the follicles without destroying the skin or the melanocytes (pigment-producing cells). This is important because when melanocytes are damaged, it can contribute to pigmentation issues such as hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation (pale or light spots and patches).

The hairs treated in laser hair reduction must be treated in a specific growth phase or during the active growth stage. The hairs in this phase are rich in melanin and keratin, which makes them receptive to light. Individual hairs, however, grow at different rates, which is why multiple treatments are needed to see your desired results.

Take note: Laser hair reduction in Singapore and similar methods do inhibit hair growth, but not permanently. You cannot expect them to remove 100% of the hairs in the treated area. It can target about 80 to 90% of unwanted hair, but hair left behind should be fine and light. Maintenance sessions are also needed to maintain the results.

FAQs

What are the benefits of  laser hair reduction?

  • Provides significant hair reduction
  • Delivers light energy to hundreds of follicles at a time
  • Can treat large areas safely and effectively
  • Can treat different skin types and tones, including darker skin

What are the treatable areas?

Almost any area can be treated, including the:

  • Face (beard, upper lip)
  • Underarms
  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Bikini
  • Brazilian

What results can you expect?

These vary from patient to patient. After the initial treatment, however, you can expect about 10 to 25% hair reduction in the treated area. Some enjoy permanent hair reduction for several months, or in some cases a year. You may also see some hair regrowth, but it is fine and less noticeable.

Factors that can affect the number of treatments needed and results of your laser hair reduction include:

  • Hair color
  • Hair thickness
  • The area treated
  • Skin color
  • Type of laser or device used
  • Hormonal fluctuations

How many treatments will you need?

Most patients need between two and six laser treatments to have smooth and almost hair-free skin. Some patients report permanent hair reduction, while others may require a touch-up session every six to twelve months.

Is there downtime?

Generally, it does not require real downtime, although there may be redness and mild swelling in the treated area immediately after the procedure. Most patients, however, return to their normal activities.

Do the treated hair follicles grow back?

Treated hair follicles in the active growth stage are permanently damaged and should not grow back. Do take note, however, that follicles that were not in the said stage will still have to be treated.

There are also instances where patients can see fine hairs after the initial treatment due to hormonal fluctuations (in pregnancy, menopause, stress, or changes in medications). Touch-up treatments are recommended.

Are there side effects?

Temporary side effects include redness, swelling, and itching immediately after the treatment. They are usually minor and can last for a few hours or days. There are rare side effects, such as blistering and scarring, especially when the procedure is done by an unskilled person or if you don’t follow pre- and post-treatment instructions.
